I Shall Sing of Your Strength
It seems like King David was often in great need of being delivered from his enemies. Though David often needed God to save his life from bloodthirsty enemies, David had something special in his heart. He had a sure faith in the LORD’s power and love to save him in whatever way God’s wisdom chose. And… David had a heart filled with thanksgiving for everything God did.
That’s something everyone should remember. Complaining comes so naturally to our sinful natures — but, when people do have their desires fulfilled, they often forget to give sincere thanks the way King David did. We all need loving hearts of faith that joyfully sing God’s praises for every good thing God blesses us with.
In Psalm 59, David tells of how his enemies were stalking him all the time in an attempt to ambush him and kill him. David realized that they were very ungodly men, full of hatred and cursing for no reason at all, since David had never done anything to offend them. Because David was innocent of any wrongdoing, he put his trust in the LORD and sang God’s praises — knowing that God is the Almighty.
Full of faith, David sang in Psalm 59:16-17,
But as for me, I shall sing of Your strength;
Yes, I shall joyfully sing of Your lovingkindness in the morning,
For You have been my stronghold
And a refuge in the day of my distress.
O my strength, I will sing praises to You;
For God is my stronghold, the God who shows me lovingkindness.
In all his troubles, David was glad and sure of God’s “lovingkindness” and “strength” to help. He had no bitterness over his dire situation — nor did he ever deny the LORD’s faithfulness and mercy. Why? Because David knew from God’s word that the LORD loves His children — all those who put their trust in the LORD.
Whatever our challenges in life, we need to “joyfully sing” God’s praises for all the good reasons that David mentions throughout the Psalms.
Acknowledging God’s faithful love and His wisdom in guiding us through this life, we say, “Hallelujah! LORD, thank You for being our sure defense and help in every situation.”
Love,
Margaret
