Who Humbles Himself to Behold
The LORD God is almighty and all-powerful so far beyond our imagination that we literally are as nothing in His holy sight. There are Bible verses that compare us to a vapor that vanishes, a worm, and less than a piece of dust. In spite of this huge difference between God and us, His creation, the LORD cares about our every thought, feeling, and condition.
When you think about that, it’s mind-boggling. Psalm 113:5-7 puts it this way,
Who is like the LORD our God,
Who is enthroned on high,
Who humbles Himself to behold
The things that are in heaven and in the earth?
He raises the poor from the dust,
And lifts the needy from the ash heap.
Since there is no other lord or god — and since there never has been any other lord or god — and since there never will be any other lord or god — there simply is nothing that can be compared to the LORD God Almighty. He is far above all and over all. We need to remember that.
The LORD is so far above us, He has to humble Himself just to look at us! And then, think about how proud people get with their measly, little accomplishments. Our pride is shameful, to say the least. Nevertheless, the LORD our God still humbles Himself to look at us and our needs. The LORD humbles Himself to care about our every thought, and feeling, and condition. He ever faithfully cares for us.
The psalmist noted that by saying, “He raises the poor from the dust, and lifts the needy from the ash heap.” The psalmist did not say God raises the proud and lifts up the arrogant. But, God tends to those who are humble — those who are poor in spirit and needy in their repentance.
Back in the Old Testament times, when a person was in deep sorrow over his sins and desperate circumstances, he would express his sorrow and lowly condition to God by throwing dust on his head or sitting in an ash heap. God Almighty raises these humble people as they repent of their sinful natures.
Do we want the LORD God Almighty to lift us up? Do we want joy and peace restored to us?
Then we need to realize our sinfulness and repent with sincere hearts. We need to acknowledge the love of God Almighty in Jesus Christ and admit that only Jesus can wash away our sins. If we want God to lift us up from the sorrows of our sins, we’ve got to stop being proud and arrogant towards Him. He is the One in power. He is the One who holds our lives in His hand. He is the One who gives us breath to live each day.
As we humble ourselves, God will stoop down to help us up. Then we can say, “Hallelujah! Lord, Your name is blessed forever because You really care for us all.”
Love,
Margaret
