Cast Up a Highway
Because only the LORD God is able to truly help us in our needs, we are commanded to sing praises to Him alone and to worship only Him. If we refuse to admit that only the LORD God can help us in our needs, we are blocking God’s way to help us. If we want and need help, God is more than glad to help us, when we faithfully admit that He alone is able to help — that He alone is LORD and God over all. Therefore, Psalm 68:4 gives us a command with some directions,
Sing to God, sing praises to His name;
Cast up a highway for Him who rides through the deserts,
Whose name is the LORD, and exult before Him.
This psalm does not tell us to just sing any ol’ song to try to make ourselves happy. It is not telling us to think positively and have a philosophically cheerful outlook on life so we can make ourselves get in a better mood. All of that is for people who don’t know the LORD as the one and only true God over all.
Those people who do realize that only the LORD is the true God, the Creator and Sustainer of all, sometimes need to be reminded to look at the truth of all things. Absolutely everybody gets down-in-the-dumps many times throughout life. As we read God’s word, we see many instances where God’s children were depressed over their circumstances. That’s life, because “stuff” happens.
As we face truth, we remember and admit that only the LORD is God — only the LORD is our Help and Shield. For that very reason we can and should sing praises to God, our Help. When we sing honest praises, we are casting up a highway for God to come into our lives. A good highway is always built up above the surrounding ground. When it is built up and solid, it is much easier to travel on — so much nicer than an old dirt road with ruts, rocks, and all sorts of debris in the way.
The song in our heart that speaks the truth about God’s love and care for us builds up a highway for God to come into our lives and helps us in our needs. When our hearts are burdened with all the troubles we face in this world, our hearts are a desert. In our depression, we feel dry and parched. We feel dead and useless — without any hope.
Then we should turn to the truth. The LORD is still God. He always has been God and He always will be God. There is no other real God. It is as we turn to the truth that we are able to start singing God’s praises. We can sing because God is our Hope, our Savior, our heavenly Father, our Creator and Sustainer. He’s that and so much more. It’s like “Hey! Wake up! God loves you. You are His child. He cares for you. Go to your Father because He wants to help you.”
As we rejoice before our heavenly Father, who dearly loves us in Jesus Christ, we are building up a highway. We are opening up the door to our hearts. Let us look at the truth and build up a good highway for God to come into the deserts of our hearts. Only He can make our deserts bountiful gardens, filled with good fruits as we keep on singing praises to God, where praises are due. It is God’s grace that leads us to a deeper trust and faith for the LORD to carry us through the things we need to endure in order to be refined into a faith of pure gold.
With a song of truth in our hearts, we sing, “Hallelujah! Lord, thank You for caring about us and for bearing our burdens. Thank You for a beautiful salvation in Jesus Christ.”
Love,
Margaret
