A Jealous God

April 17, 2018

A Jealous God

You are loved  — the very beloved  of the LORD God Almighty.    With you,  it is the same  as when Paul greets the Roman congregation  in Romans 1:7,

beloved of God…  called as saints:   Grace to you and peace  from God our Father  and the Lord Jesus Christ.

God loves us so much  that He is jealous  of anything  that might take us away  from Him.     In love,  the LORD wants  to protect us,  and nurture us,  and cause us to grow  in His love.    God in His almighty wisdom knows  that if we leave Him and His protective love,  we are in grave danger  of becoming unbelievers  and ending up  in the torments  of hell.     That is why  when God spoke to Moses  and gave him all sorts of directions  for guiding the people  of Israel,  God said in Exodus 34:14-16,

You shall not worship  any other god,  for the LORD,  whose name is Jealous,  is a jealous God — lest you make a covenant  with the inhabitants  of the land  and they play the harlot  with their gods,  and sacrifice  to their gods,  and someone invite you  to eat of his sacrifice;  and you take some  of his daughters  for your sons,  and his daughters play the harlot  with their gods,  and cause your sons also  to play the harlot  with their gods.

God knows  that a little temptation can lead  to great disasters  with eternal effects.     So,  it is a holy love  that makes God  a jealous God.     God’s love does not want  to see us suffer.     This holy love  does not want us  to live a lie.     As God’s dear children  we are  to love living  in the truth — the truth  of God’s Lordship  over all things — the truth that God alone  is the Creator  of all things — the truth that we have salvation only  in Jesus Christ.

If we set these truths aside,  just so that we can fool around  with this world’s temptations  for awhile,  we put ourselves in danger — because we are the ones  who have left  God’s side.     God has not left us.     We are choosing  to deny the authority  of God,  trying to set ourselves up  as the authority  in our measly lives.     That’s where our road  in life  gets very slippery and dangerous.

God wants us  to draw near  to Him  every day  and look to Him  for all our needs.     Because He is our heavenly Father, He greatly desires  that we lay all our burdens  on Him  and trust  in His loving care.     When we believe  that God  is the Judge of all  and that we are saved  by the grace of God  through faith  in Jesus Christ,  something happens.    Paul points out  in 1 Corinthians 3:23  what happens  to our whole being.     He says,

You belong to Christ.

We belong to Christ — to God.     And He is very jealous  to keep us  as His own dear children.     That is a good thing.     No one on earth  can love us  as fully  as the Lord loves us.     There is nothing on earth  worth trading  that love for — nothing.

Let us rejoice  and be glad  that God loves us  with a jealous love  and wants to keep us  as His very own  for all eternity.     It’s the only protection we have  in the world.     As we look  at the wonders  of this ever faithful love  for us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  thank You  for caring for us  even when we have not known how  to care  about Your care.     Keep us  in Your word and truth,  to protect us all our days.”
