Like Newborn Babes
Like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the word, that by it you may grow in respect to salvation, if you have tasted the kindness of the Lord.
1 Peter 2:2-3
So many people today don’t really care what kind of church they go to. They are willing to absorb all sorts of false teachings that are plainly contrary to God’s word — just so long as someone assures them of heaven or some other benefit. Often times they just love all sorts of worldly promises of good fortune. Sometimes they just like the building and assume it has to be a good church because of its architecture. Or, they might choose a church because it has many social activities to give them a feeling of “belonging”. They might choose a church because it has a “Little League” ball team and is a supposedly good place for their kids to be.
None of those are the right reasons for going to a church. Peter tells us that we need to be taking in God’s true word voraciously — “Like newborn babes, long for the pure milk of the word.” When we realize just what it is that God is offering us in Christ Jesus, we should be wanting to study the Bible to find out its truths for ourselves and live. We should be wanting the “pure milk of the word”.
There are so many false preachers, who are looking for nothing but money and to glorify themselves. If we don’t study the pure word of God every day, we won’t be able to distinguish a false preacher from a true preacher. We cannot depend on a mere man to lead us to Christ. When we have an inkling that Jesus is the Savior, we need to find out for ourselves what He Himself has to say about the salvation He is offering to us. That means reading the Bible every day.
It’s obvious that many churches are not sharing “the pure milk of the word”. Their teachings are a direct contradiction to what God teaches in His word. But, how can anyone realize that unless they actually take the time to study the Bible?
The Bible is not a formidable book to read. It is our heavenly Father’s word to us, His children. He is telling us things we can understand. If a baby is denied good milk, it will become sickly and die. It’s the same for us. If we don’t read the true word of God, we will become spiritually sick, and die eternally. We want to get to heaven — we want to live the way God wants us to live — we want the blessings of God. All of these longings have shown us that we have experienced — we have “tasted the kindness of the Lord”. We realize there is something good in what God is offering.
In that first “taste” of the true salvation God has to give us — we should want more and more and more of this true salvation — we should be wanting to grow up big and strong in the salvation God offers. That means we should want only the truth of God — only the good stuff.
Why settle for garbage? No one can get strong and healthy on garbage.
A baby does not try to drink all the milk there is in one sitting. Likewise, we are not to try and read the whole Bible in one sitting. Like a baby, voraciously read a small portion and then take time to digest it. Meditate on it. Think about what God wants to teach us in that portion. Take it to heart and live it. Then, voraciously read another portion and take time to absorb it. Then you will grow strong in a healthy manner with “the pure milk of the word”.
We only have this one earthly life to live before the Judgment. Let us go for the good stuff.
Don’t deny yourself the “pure milk of the word”. Take care of yourself spiritually by staying close to our Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer. As we draw near to our Savior, He will draw near to us, and we say, “Hallelujah! Lord, Your love is so pure, holy, and faithful. Thank You for seeking us with Your word and drawing us near to You.”
Love,
Margaret
