Clean and Enduring Forever
Psalm 19:9 “The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever.”
“The fear of the LORD” refers to having a moral reverence for the LORD of lords and God of gods. And, to have reverence means to have a deep respect, love and awe because of the absolute greatness and sacredness of the LORD.
In this Psalm, God is telling us that the right kind of moral reverence for the fact that He is the Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer of all is something that is “clean”. Really “clean”. In other words, this right kind of moral reverence is pure and morally right for us.
What makes it morally right? The fact that God is all holiness, righteousness, and goodness. It is only right to revere what is right and good.
Therefore, it is morally wrong for us to have any sort of respect for what is evil. It does not matter what the evil is. If we are afraid of not being “politically correct” — of fighting what is evil — of rejecting temptations to do evil — then we are not fearing the LORD in a way that is “clean”. It is the LORD we need to fear, not this world’s evil.
All this evil, every kind of temptation, every sort of mockery of God’s holiness is going to be destroyed forever. So, why should we ever feel “obliged” to do what is evil, just because we’re afraid of rejection or mockery from people who will meet eternal destruction?
That doesn’t make sense.
We need to fear and respect what is eternal, what will affect us eternally — namely, the LORD God Almighty.
It is morally right for us to have love, respect, and reverence for God. We show that love, respect, and reverence by obeying God. That whole thing of fearing (respecting) the LORD is eternal. That is what we will see forever in heaven. Everyone in heaven will be honoring and serving the LORD with their whole being. We will all be serving God with joy and love, and high praises for all the good He does.
Heaven is our home. Let us act like it while traveling through this wilderness.
As we go on our way rejoicing, we say, “Hallelujah! LORD God, You give us everything good in this life — testings to help us grow in the true faith and grace to strengthen us to live according to Your word. Keep us close to You in faith, hope and love.”
Love,
Margaret
