His Greatness Is Unsearchable
When one thinks about it, we are pretty limited. We can only run so fast — and the older we get, the slower that pace gets. We can only see so far even with 20/20 eyesight. Our hearing range has limitations. We can only feel what is within our hand’s reach — and then, are limited to the degree of heat, cold, sharpness, or whatever that we can experience. Our knowledge is limited — even in our area of expertise! Our lives have one limitation after another and we’ll never be able to overcome those limitations in this life. Some say, “Bummer!” They want to exceed these limits for various reasons.
God created us with limitations for very good reasons. We are sinners, who do not always use our God-given gifts in a godly manner. But, God is unlimited in everything far beyond our imaginations. Psalm 145:3 proclaims,
Great is the LORD, and highly to be praised;
And His greatness is unsearchable.
There is so much we don’t understand, but Psalm 147:5 says of God, “His understanding is infinite.” There is no end to God’s understanding.
Psalm 147:17 then asks us, “Who can stand before His cold?” We cannot bear the cold or heat that the Lord created and can send upon us.
We hope that when we flub up, no one will notice, and maybe nobody will. But, Psalm 69:5 shows that our sins are known. It says, “O God, it is Thou who dost know my folly, and my wrongs are not hidden from Thee.”
We think we are alone in our moments of privacy, but we can’t hide anything from the LORD. In Psalm 139:1-4, David says,
“O LORD, Thou hast searched me and known me.
Thou dost know when I sit down and when I rise up;
Thou dost understand my thought from afar.
Thou dost scrutinize my path and my lying down,
And art intimately acquainted with all my ways.
Even before there is a word on my tongue,
Behold, O LORD, Thou dost know it all.”
We are limited in time and space, but Psalm 139:7 notes, “Where can I go from Thy Spirit? Or where can I flee from Thy presence?” We have no clue about all that God does, but He knows everything about us.
We have a date of birth and of death, intermingled with sicknesses, accidents, miseries, loneliness, worries and sorrows. But, Psalm 90:2 says of the Lord,
Before the mountains were born,
Or Thou didst give birth to the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God.
We sweat and struggle trying to make new inventions and get them to the market before someone else does. But, creating all things with marvelous intricacies and wisdom is done only with God’s word. Many verses tell of God’s ability to speak and have it done. 2 Peter 3:5 confirms all those verses by saying, “By the word of God the heavens existed long ago.” And, Genesis chapter 1 is filled with “And God said” and then, “And there was” to emphasize God’s power and authority to create just by His will and word.
There is no end to all the comparisons we could make between our weaknesses and God’s almighty powers. We cannot even learn about everything God has done — whether it be of His creation or His authority over history. As we consider just some of the things God has done, we can say with King David in Psalm 145:1,
I will extol Thee, my God, O King;
And I will bless Thy name forever and ever.
As we bless God’s love and power on this earth, we will be able to bless His name forever in heaven. And now we say, “Hallelujah! My LORD, You have done all things well. Your love and mercy are over all You have made. Lead us to our home in heaven.”
Love,
Margaret
