Had It Not Been the LORD
There are times when we just barely make it through an intimidating and scary situation. It was an escape “by the skin of our teeth” — and when we think about our narrow escape, it about takes our breath away. We realize our escape was due to a power far beyond our control.
King David was in many such embattled situations. There were often times when his capture and possible death at the hands of the enemy were imminent. For each time that he escaped, David fully realized that escape was not totally due to his prowess and expertise as a soldier. Only God Almighty could have possibly rescued him, because human help was not there.
When such things happen to us, it is only right that we praise and honor the LORD, just as David did. We need to give credit where credit is due. And so, on one occasion David wrote Psalm 124 as a “Thank You” from the depths of his grateful heart. Let us thank God for our escapes as we read David’s praise in Psalm 124.
“Had it not been the LORD who was on our side,”
Let Israel now say,
“Had it not been the LORD who was on our side,
When men rose up against us;
Then they would have swallowed us alive,
When their anger was kindled against us;
Then the waters would have engulfed us,
The stream would have swept over our soul;
Then the raging waters would have swept over our soul.”
Blessed be the LORD,
Who has not given us to be torn by their teeth.
Our soul has escaped as a bird out of the snare of the trapper;
The snare is broken and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name of the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth.
In all this, it is important to note how David always trusted in the LORD. He always depended on the Lord for all of his needs. And, David was in the habit of giving thanks where thanks is due.
We need to remember where our blessings and escapes come from — and give thanks to the LORD God Almighty for His gracious and faithful love. There is no other salvation.
As we think of our blessings and give thanks, we say, “Hallelujah! Lord, thank You for taking care of our needs and teaching us to put our faith in You. Only You can help us through this world of trials and tribulations. All glory is to Your holy name.”
Love,
Margaret
