The Sum of Thy Word
Psalm 119:160
The sum of Thy word is truth,
And every one of Thy righteous ordinances is everlasting.
Some people like to pick and choose what they want to believe in the Bible. Consequently, they choose to believe only the things that comfort them and make them feel good about themselves. They gladly latch onto the promises of heaven, but see no need to repent or stop their sinful lifestyle. They feel it is wrong for anyone to steal from them, but claim it is okay to not pay someone else a fair amount for work done. Such examples could go on and on.
What God says to us is said in love. The Bible is our heavenly Father speaking to us and teaching us His ways. He wants us to grow up in truth and not be swayed by our sins or the opinions of unbelievers. If we only hold to little bits of the Bible, we will not be living in the truth. The psalmist said, “The sum of Thy word is truth”. We need to add together all the verses on the subjects we are studying to learn the whole of what God is saying to us.
The psalmist said, “every one of Thy righteous ordinances is everlasting.” It is not just some of God’s word that is righteous and good for us. Every single word points to and describes God’s everlasting righteousness. That righteousness is something God wants to see in all of us — His children. Because God always has been and always will be righteous, His words and commands will never change.
What God says is not meant to enslave us to impossible ways. God’s ways are good and holy, bringing us true joy, peace, and happiness. Because God’s ways are “everlasting”, these are the ways we will naturally be when we get to heaven. In heaven it won’t be a struggle to be good and holy. Holiness will be a pure joy.
But, here on earth, we do need to struggle to live as a true child of God ought to live. Since God will never change His definitions of righteousness, holiness, truth, love, salvation, joy, mercy, forgiveness, judgment, etc., we need to take a good, long look at God’s word to us. There we will get a tiny glimpse of the absolute wonders awaiting us in heaven — the everlasting wonders.
As we see how beautiful and wondrous God’s love and faithfulness have been towards us, we say, “Hallelujah! Lord, the truths of Your love far surpass all knowledge. You have done far more than any human can describe to bring us to salvation in Jesus Christ.”
Love,
Margaret
