Besides You, I Desire Nothing

Besides You, I Desire Nothing

It’s easy  to desire all sorts of things  that we see  in this world — especially when we see  what other people have.     It can seem  like some people are just plain prosperous,  healthy,  smart,  and in control  of their lives.     And,  when these people,  who seem to have everything,  also are arrogant  and deny God  as the LORD,  it’s easy  to get to wondering  about if maybe we’re missing the boat  in life.

If we’re not rich,  don’t feel  like the sharpest knife  in the drawer,  don’t seem  to be able to control various situations,  and maybe have some sort  of health problem — we can get  to feeling a bit bitter  about our position  in life.

The psalmist,  Asaph,  wondered about those things  in his life.     He just felt sad  seeing arrogant,  ungodly people  get everything good  in life,  while he had  to make do  with less.     But,  one day,  while praying  to the LORD  about it in the sanctuary,  Asaph realized  that he had not been looking  at the whole picture  of our lives — as God sees it.

All the “blessings”  of the ungodly  would be destroyed  in a moment.     When it was their time  to die,  they would be  in sudden terrors  forever and ever,  without end — terrors that one doesn’t even want  to think about.

But,  when we have God  in our lives here  on earth,  we will have God  by our side forever  in heaven.     With our Savior  in our hearts now,  we are guaranteed a home  in heaven.    When Asaph came  to this blessed realization,  he was awe struck  at the ways  of our LORD.     And then,  grateful Asaph had to sing  in Psalm 73:25-26,

Whom have I  in heaven  but You?
And besides You,  I desire nothing  on earth.

My flesh  and my heart  may fail,
But God  is the strength  of my heart  and my portion forever.

When our Savior is  in our heart,  we don’t need anything else.     The going may be tough  here on earth,  but our rewards  in heaven  will more than make up  for whatever trials  we go through here.     Just knowing  about the blessings,  joys,  wellness,  and glory  that is ours  in heaven  tells us  that we don’t really need anything more here  on earth.     We can wait  for the really good things.     Our good things  are eternal.

As we live here,  desiring only  to have our Savior  in our heart,  we gladly look forward  to our home  in heaven  and say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  You do,  indeed,  provide well  for my needs.     You prepare  within me  a clean heart  and a right spirit,  so that my trials here  are filled with faith,  hope  and love,  as I anticipate being  with You forever.”
