What Good Is the Resurrection?

What Good Is the Resurrection?

Many people have no clue  about the value  of Jesus’ resurrection.     They are so inundated  with cute bunnies  and chickies,  egg hunts  and big dinners,  new clothes and flowers  that they don’t have time  to think about any real meaning  of the resurrection.     They celebrate  because it’s time  to celebrate.     But,  there’s that emptiness  because they’re not sure  what Christianity is celebrating.

It’s good  to have a clue.

In Romans 7,  Paul talks about  what Christ’s resurrection does.      Paul explains  how we used to be bound  to the Law  and all sorts  of sinful passions.     The resurrection  sets us free  from the Law  and our fleshly way  of being.     In his explanation  in Romans 7:4,  Paul says,

Therefore,  my brethren,  you also were made  to die  to the Law  through the body  of Christ,  that you might be joined  to anotherto Him  who was raised  from the dead,  that we might bear fruit  for God.

We no longer have to obey  the long list  of Old Testament Laws — because,  we now belong  to Christ by faith.     When we have faith  in Christ’s resurrection,  our lives change  and we are enabled  to “bear fruit  for God”.      In other words,  we no longer try  to be good  because we’re afraid  of the result  of not following  absolutely all of those rules.     Instead,  as we see God’s love and power  in Christ  to save us  from our sins,  we now gladly want  to live the way  God wants us  to live.     Now we know  we are His beloved.     In this joyful obedience,  we are bearing “fruit  for God”.      This “fruit”  that God wants from us  includes faith,  hope,  and love.

When we are trying  to make it  through this life  all on our own strength,  we don’t really stand  a chance.     And,  deep down  in our hearts  we know  we don’t stand a chance,  but feel we are bound  to keep struggling on  any way.     We don’t know  what else to do.

But,  now we don’t have to be alone  in our efforts any more.     We have help.     As Paul explains  in Ephesians 2:13,

But now  in Christ Jesus  you who formerly were far off  have been brought near  by the blood  of Christ.

Now,  instead of trying  to get through life  on our own efforts,  we have Christ Jesus  by our side.     Jesus has done  all things  for us.     Because of Christ’s suffering,  death,  and resurrection,  we are now in Christ Jesus”.     United to Christ by faith,  we have spiritual resources  to help us  along our way.

That is why Paul praises God  in Ephesians 1:3,  by saying,

Blessed be the God and Father  of our Lord Jesus Christ,  who has blessed us  with every spiritual blessing  in the heavenly places  in Christ.

Because of Jesus’ resurrection,  we have “every spiritual blessing”  we need  to get us  through this life.     What are some  of the spiritual blessings  that can be ours  right here and now?     The list includes:   total forgiveness — the assurance  of eternal life — true righteousness — Godly wisdom — a Godly love — joy — peace — victory over sin — Godly discernment — courage to stand  in the truth — strength  to endure trials — perseverance  in sticking to God’s word — a growing understanding  of God’s word  in the Bible — the knowledge and assurance  that God hears our prayers  and will do what is right  and good — the heartfelt response  of worshiping God  for who He is,  our Creator and Redeemer.     With all this  and tons more,  we think about  what God does for us  in Christ.

It is because  of the power  of the resurrection  in our lives  that these blessings are ours.   The apostle John puts it  this way  in John 1:16-17,

For of His fulness  we have all received,  and grace  upon grace.     For the law  was given  through Moses;  grace and truth  were realized  through Jesus Christ.

As we live in grace and truth,   we live  in the resurrection power  of Jesus Christ.     Got grace  and truth?     With these blessings  we can go  on our way rejoicing  and say,  “Hallelujah!     My Lord,  in Your resurrection  You have fulfilled prophecy  and proven  that You alone  are Lord and God  over all.     Let me always live  in Your grace  and truth.”

Love,
Margaret
