Those Who Know Thy Name Will…

Everybody has a reputation  of some sort — either good  or bad  or somewhere  in between.     Our reputations are based  on things like honesty,  kindheartedness,  work ethics,  disposition,  concern for others,  etc.      So,  when someone mentions a name,  others might recognize  that name  and  (rightly or wrongly)  think  or say,  “Oh ya…  that’s the guy/gal  that ___________.”      If they actually know  that person,  one’s reputation brings up memories  and opinions — sometimes based  on facts  and sometimes not.

Those same kinds of memories  and opinions  are held  in regard  to the LORD  of lords — sometimes rightly,  sometimes wrongly,  sometimes factual,  sometimes not.    It can be confusing,  but  Psalm 9:10 puts it  this way,

And those who know Thy name  will  put their trust  in Thee;
For Thou,  O LORD,  hast not forsaken those  who seek Thee.

The opinions  of many people  regarding the LORD  simply are not helpful  to others,  because they don’t really know the LORD.     Their opinions  are based on misinformation  from others  because the others  didn’t know the LORD either.     Opinions regarding the LORD  fly around the world everywhere  in all sorts  of media,  but they might be baseless.

What the psalmist pointed out  is that those who know  Thy name  will put their trust  in Thee.”     Those who have experienced  God’s love  and forgiveness — those who have seen  how God has fulfilled prophecies  over thousands of years — those who are thankful  for the times  God has provided  for their needs — these are the ones  who have learned  to put their trust  in the LORD.

Knowing  is believing.     These people come  to know the LORD  through hearing His word  and the Spirit’s leading them  to see the truth  in it.      As they “seek”  the Lord,  God lets them find Him  and He gives them assurances  of His truths  as they see its evidence.

When King David made Solomon his successor,  he said to him  in 1 Chronicles 28:9,

Know the God  of your father,  and serve Him  with a whole heart  and a willing mind;   for the LORD searches  all hearts,  and understands  every intent  of the thoughts.     If you seek Him,  He will let you  find Him;  but if you forsake Him,  He will reject you  forever.

When we have  the least little inclination  to let the Holy Spirit work  in our hearts,  God will mercifully let us  find Him.     It’s not our doing.     It’s just letting  God be God  in our lives.     As  we are led  to seek the LORD  more often,  we will come  to know Him.     We will come  to know the seriousness  of our sins  and their consequences — and the unfathomable forgiveness  we have  in Jesus Christ.     We will come  to see  how God has kept  all the promises  in His word — and we will look  for God’s help  in every aspect  of our lives.     We will see the evidence  of God’s power  in all  of creation — and we will realize  that God’s power  can  and will carry us  through this life  of trials.

There is great peace  in knowing the LORD  for who He really is.     We can get acquainted  by delving  into His word  and honestly seeking Him  in prayer.     When we finally  know the LORD,  we will trust Him.

Then,  with praise  for all that God has done  for us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  thank You  for opening my eyes,  and heart,  and mind  to know You  in the right way.     All praise  and honor  and glory  truly belong  to Your name.”

Love,
Margaret
