There Will Your Heart Be Also
This world is so full of good things and seemingly good things. We see and desire good foods, nice clothing, fabulous properties, impressive vehicles, educational degrees, success in our profession, health, wealth, and beauty. These can be fine things to have and some people will put all their energy, time, and resources into obtaining them.
As enjoyable as all these things are, God wants us to see the truth about them all. Showing that they are all temporary, in Luke 12:30-34, Jesus teaches us,
For all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek; but your Father knows that you need these things. But seek for His kingdom, and these things shall be added to you. Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves purses which do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near, nor moth destroys.
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Because all these “good things” of the world are temporary, we should not dare to hold them as being so precious that we would not be willing to give them up for the Lord’s sake.
We need to take stock of what we hold most dear in this world. Is it something we can take with us to heaven?
What can we take to heaven? Nothing, except our faith in Jesus, hope, and love. Do we possess faith in Jesus — hope in all His promises for us — and the love of God? If we honestly do “seek for His kingdom”, God will surely let us have it. Because God has promised to gladly give us a home in heaven, we don’t have to be afraid about not having some of the temporary things that the world holds dear. We are headed for much better things. We are headed for lasting things — things eternal.
That’s why we have to be willing to make the all-important, big trade. We need to be willing to trade all this worldly stuff that gets old, rots and deceives us for an eternal home with everlasting treasures — things that will never, ever rot, or deceive, or abandon us. Because of God’s truthfulness and love, we can gladly give up the things that can keep us out of heaven.
If our heart treasures egocentric things, that can only temporarily satisfy our worldly desires, then all of those things have become our god. There won’t be any room in our heart to love the Lord God Almighty. We cannot love God and the world at the same time because they are so opposite of each other.
God will provide for all that we really need in this life, and the rest of what we might desire needs to rest in the wisdom of our heavenly Father, who truly knows our real needs. God alone knows how to lead us through this dark world to our heavenly home. We can trust Him to do everything that is best for us in the long run — even if we think we are hurting in some way or another.
Our first priority needs to be to “seek for His kingdom”. When we do that, we are looking for the best of the best. When salvation through Jesus Christ becomes our highest treasure, our hearts will be with Him. When our hearts are with the Lord, heaven is our home with all of its eternal glories and riches. We couldn’t ask for more.
Holding onto the promises of God is so much better than trying to hold onto something that will keep us out of heaven — robbing us of eternal life. Which shall we choose? Which is eternally the most sensible to choose?
Trusting in God to take care of our earthly needs, we say, “Hallelujah! Abba, Father, it is so good to be Your dear child. Thank you for loving me so dearly that You care for my every need according to Your wisdom.”
Love,
Margaret
