In the World You Have Tribulation, But…

In the World You Have Tribulation, But…

It’s obvious this world is full  of troubles  for everybody.     We cannot escape meeting up  with challenges,  problems,  and out-and-out temptations.     Just before Jesus was about to suffer  and die  for our sins,  He had a long talk  with His followers and told them  what they should expect  out of life  after He would be taken away  from them.     In John 16:33,  Jesus says,

These things  I have spoken to you,  that in Me  you may have peace.     In the world  you have tribulation,  but  take courage;  I have overcome the world.

We often wonder why  we have to have  so awfully much trouble  all the time.     When we stop and think about it,  we see how the Lord God Almighty  is pure and holy  in all His ways.     God’s word says  that we are  to grow  to be like Him.     Seeing how sinful we are now,  it’s obvious  that it will take a lot of doing  to lead us  into a more godly life style.      Psalm 119:71 says,

It is good  for me  that I was afflicted,
That I may learn  Thy statutes.

All these tribulations help  to mold us  into seeing  and understanding  the awesome goodness  of living God’s way.     Being aware of this,  we can entrust our souls  to the Lord  and just let Him  keep on teaching  and leading us.

We also need  to think  about just  “who”  we  were  serving  when we lived  according to the ways  of this world.     We were serving Satan,  who is now totally upset  at seeing us turn  to the Lord.     We should not imagine  that the devil will leave us alone  after we’ve rejected him.     After all,  we are told  in 1 Peter 5:8,

Your adversary,  the devil,  prowls about  like a roaring lion,  seeking someone  to devour.

To add to that,  Paul tells us  in 2 Corinthians 11:14-15,

Satan disguises himself  as an angel of light.     Therefore  it is not surprising  if his servants also  disguise themselves  as servants  of righteousness;  whose end shall be  according to their deeds.

We can see from this  that the world is not  our “friend”,  even though  it pretends to be.     We can be mighty sure  that throughout our whole stay  on earth,  we surely will meet up  with all sorts  of tribulations  that will try us  to the utmost.     We might even feel  that they will break us.

Even as we consider all of this,  we dare not forget  to admit  what is in our own hearts.     We were all born  in sin.     Sin lives in us.     Jeremiah 17:9  laments,

The heart is more deceitful  than all else
And is desperately sick;
Who can understand it?

So, we can’t  just blame the devil  and the world  for our tribulations.     Our own hearts  reveal more than enough wickedness  to be concerned about.     It’s like we are trapped  in sin and tribulations.     That is why Jesus told His followers,  “These things I have spoken to you,  that in Me  you may have peace.”     Our Lord knows the battles  we are facing  and He greatly desires  that we constantly abide  in Him  and His ways,  so that we will have peace.

When Jesus lives  in our hearts  by faith  and we abide  in His word,  He will give us  a continuous stream  of strength  and peace  to overcome everything we need  to face  in this world.     In faith,  we turn  to Jesus  for all our needs,  because He has  “overcome the world”.     The one and only way  we can overcome this world  is  to draw near  to our Savior  in faith,  hope,  and love.

As we walk  with our Lord  through this world,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  thank You  for leading me  in the peace  of Your righteousness  and faithful love.     And,  thank You  for promising  to never leave me.”
