To Take Refuge

To Take Refuge

We all need someone we can trust implicitly.     That can be hard to find  in this world of sinners,  each with their own priorities,  belief systems,  ideals,  morals,  agendas  and values.     In people,  we will see weaknesses,  faults,  lack of knowledge,  lack of strength,  and lack of ability — failure after failure.     In other people,  we see the same faults we ourselves might have,  so we cannot honestly trust them  for the guidance  that is impossible  for them to rightly provide.

But,  there is one  we can confide in.     There is one  in whom we can put our hope,  trust,  and confidence.     In Psalm 118:8-9,  we read,

It is better  to take refuge  in the LORD
Than to trust  in man.
It is better  to take refuge  in the LORD
Than to trust  in princes.

When we need  to confide in someone  about our very deepest,  most intimate feelings,  needs,  fears,  doubts,  and longings,  we need  to run  to the LORD.    He even wants us  to come to Him.     The LORD can definitely be trusted  because He is our Creator and Redeemer.     God’s wisdom created all that we see,  and He alone already intimately knows  our thoughts  and the details  of our predicaments.     He alone  has the power and ability  to guide us rightly  in all our ways  because He knows the right way  to go.

There is no intelligence,  rank,  or strength  in man  that can equal the Lord’s intelligence,  rank,  and strength.     So,  no matter what we are facing,  “It is better  to take refuge  in the LORD.”     God’s intelligence is witnessed  in all of creation.     Since God is the LORD of lords,  God of gods,  and King of kings,  He alone  out-ranks every single one of us.     We are only a small part  of His creation,  so we should  not  be so audacious  as to suppose  we are stronger  than the LORD  in any way,  manner,  shape,  or form.

Taking all things into consideration,  there is no doubt  that “It is better  to take refuge  in the LORD.”     So,  let us not imagine  that we can live  without paying respect  to our Refuge  and Strength,  our Fortress  and our Rock of Salvation,  our Savior and God.     It is nothing short  of pure foolishness  to refuse to take refuge in the LORD”  when our needs are so great.

We are better enabled  to trust in the Lord  as we listen  to His word  and study His word.     Learning God’s word needs  to be a daily experience,  so that little by little  we can gain the wisdom  of His ways  and become sanctified  in the truths  of His salvation  in Jesus Christ.    It is the sum total  of all of God’s word  that guides us  and draws us close  to the Lord  in a stronger confidence  and faith.     Then,  as we go to God  in prayer,  we can better understand  the right way to go  and have the courage  to go  in that right way.

At peace  in the righteousness  of the Lord’s trustworthiness,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  You alone  are able  to protect me  and lead me  in righteousness.     Thank You  for faithfully caring  for my needs.”
