Give Me Understanding

Give Me Understanding

There is so much a person can want  to understand  in this world.     We might wonder:   what causes people  to want  to create dictatorships — what is the answer  to our country’s illegal immigration woes — how can we stop the illicit drug use   that is ruining our people…….   The list is infinite.     We feel helpless — and actually we are helpless  because we cannot change the people  who do not want  to be changed.

Those who are getting away  with their favorite crime  want to continue  in their crime,  just because it is giving them  what they desire for now.     The one thing they don’t think about  is that they cannot take the  “fruit of their labors”  with them  when they die.     When they die  in their sin,  they will have nothing but eternal destruction.     But  for now,  they refuse  to think about that.     They only want  to meet their immediate desires  for power,  riches,  or the euphoria  of their choice.

It is all so unwise.     Their thinking totally lacks an understanding  of reality.     In facing reality,  we see that the LORD is God over all.     All of God’s word  regarding a Savior  and many historical events  have come true,  just as He said it would.     That means  all of God’s word  regarding Judgment Day  will also come true,  just as it is prophesied  in the Bible.

Obviously,  people need some sort of understanding  before they end up  being condemned  for all eternity.     Just because there really will be a Judgment Day  for absolutely everyone,  we need  to understand  what God expects from us — His creation.     That is why  the psalmist prays  in Psalm 119:73,

Thy hands made me  and fashioned me;
Give me understanding,  that I may learn  Thy commandments.

We need an understanding  of God’s commandments,  because we are just a creation  of the Lord.     If we  don’t desire  to understand  what the Lord wants from us,  we’ll be no different  from the rest  of this ungodly world.     God’s commandment is found  in 1 John 3:23,

And this is His commandment,  that we believe  in the name  of His Son Jesus Christ,  and love one another,  just as He commanded us.

If we want to escape eternal judgment  and be saved,  we must believe  in Jesus Christ.     People might say,  “Well, that’s easy.     I know about Jesus.”     But,  John’s statement  means much more than to just  “know about Jesus“.

If we honestly believe Jesus,  we will believe everything He said.     Jesus preached  about heaven  and hell  and the condition of the human heart.     He preached  about how we are saved  only by the grace of God  through faith  in Him.     An honest faith  greatly desires  to live according to all  of God’s commandments  because they are given  in a true wisdom,  love,  and righteousness.

When all is said and done,   the psalmist wanted  an understanding  that would lead him  to live  in faith  according to God’s will  for all of creation.     We cannot force God’s ways  on anyone else,  but we can apply God’s wisdom,  love,  and righteousness  to our own lives,  as we look  to Jesus Christ  for the forgiveness  and strength  we need each day.

As we study God’s word each day  and apply it  to our lives,  we come  to appreciate the immensity  of His love  in all of His desires  for us.     And, we say,  “Hallelujah!     My Lord,  Your ways are so good,  and perfect  and righteous.     Your ways fulfill our every desire.”
