The Words That I Have Spoken to You

August 26, 2018

The Words That I Have Spoken to You

Throughout the gospels — Matthew,  Mark,  Luke  and John — we come across many direct quotes  of what Jesus spoke  to the people.     Some of the things Jesus said  were puzzling  to the people  because they spoke  of spiritual truths — things that cause us earth bound people  to do a second take  on what was said — and how it needs  to be understood.

That is just what was happening  in John,  chapter 6,  as Jesus made statements  about how He is the Bread of Life,  that we need to eat — if we want  to live forever.      Because Jesus’ spiritual teachings  were hard to understand,  some people grumbled  and refused to listen  to Jesus any more.

Wow!     Is that what we do,  when we hear the spiritual messages,  that are given us  throughout the whole Bible?     Do we just throw up our hands  and refuse to listen  to God’s word any more?     That is the same  as throwing away  our eternal life.

Because some of the people  were refusing  to even try  to understand God’s word,  Jesus had to tell them  in John 6:63,

It is the Spirit  who gives life;  the flesh  profits nothing;  the words  that I have spoken to you  are spirit  and are life.

The whole Bible  from beginning to end  is filled with spiritual words  that will lead us  to eternal life — if we want  to accept them.     If we are having difficulty understanding  what God has said  in His word,  we just need  to ask our Savior  to help us understand  in a way that is fitting  for our spiritual growth — as we continue  to study all  of God’s word  to us.

In order to grow spiritually,  we need  to read God’s word.     The people who were grumbling  about Jesus’ sayings needed  to take time  to connect Jesus’ words  to all sorts of Old Testament passages  regarding bread — especially some of the things written  in Isaiah.     Those Old Testament passages  were things  they had already learned  in their religious upbringing,  but they were not seeing the connection.

We need to pray  that we would see the way  all of the Bible is connected — from Genesis  to Revelation.     When we take the time  to see the connections,  we will be amazed  at how precise,  powerful,  and awesome  God’s word is.     It proves itself  to be true  and trustworthy.

When we see how marvelously  God has connected prophesied events,  outcomes,  and spiritual concepts,  we will stop grumbling  at the difficulty  of spiritual words  that give us life.     Seeing and understanding  what God is teaching us  will help us to grow  in the true faith — trusting in all of God’s ways — and gladly giving up  all the deathly falsehoods  of this world.     God’s words “are spirit  and are life” — just as Jesus said.

Let us gladly listen up  to everything  God lovingly teaches us  in His word.     Then we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  Your word is true,  faithful,  and eternal.     All Your ways are good  and right  beyond human description.     Help us to accept  and understand them.”
