Be Imitators of God

September 12, 2018

Be Imitators of God

Like all young children,  our sons liked to play “big daddy”  when they were little.     Their tricycles were tractors,  pickup trucks,  and cars  as they pretended  to be doing real ranch work.     They wanted to be  just like Daddy  when they grew up.

We all have ideals  of what we want  to be like.     Our ideals are often based  on traits  that we admire  in others.     No matter who we look up to  in this life,  they all have weaknesses,  for we are all sinners.     No one is perfect — except for God.     He is our perfect ideal.

God is the One  we can all look up to  as our perfect,  eternal Father,  who never changes.     God is absolutely perfect  in love,  wisdom,  power,  authority,  purity,  holiness,  faithfulness,  humbleness,  righteousness,  and everything else  that is good and awesome.     That is why Paul tells us  in Ephesians 5:1,

Therefore,  be imitators of God,  as beloved children.

Because God is our Creator,  our heavenly Father,  it is only right and good  that we look up to Him  and imitate everything  that He stands for.     As our heavenly Father,  God wants us  to imitate all  of His ways — simply because they are good  and perfect.

We need  to be true  to what is true  for all  of eternity.     Our heavenly Father is everlasting — through all eternity.     Everything that is  not  true  to the truths  of God  will be destroyed forever.     So,  instead of egotistically setting up  earthly ideals  for ourselves,  we really need  to look to our heavenly Father — so that we can become all  that He wants us  to be.

We can openly talk  to God  about all  of our thoughts and feelings,  fears and anxieties,  because He understands them all — and,  He actually already knows  about them all,  even when we don’t share them  with Him.     But,  God still wants us  to talk to Him  about all  of our concerns  because it’s like opening up the door  of our heart  to let Him in  to help us  in our needs.

God knows our every sin.     And yes — He is very hurt and disapproving  of our willful rebellion.     And yet,  in love,  as our heavenly Father,  He still longs  to help us.     God greatly desires  for us  to get back  on the right path  that leads to heaven.     Our heavenly Father is deeply saddened over His children  who refuse to repent  and turn back  to Him,  where they can be safe.

If we don’t want God  in our lives,  He certainly won’t interfere.     But,  He grieves over us  because we are purposely bringing His righteous judgment  upon ourselves.     God longs for us  to accept His free salvation  in Jesus Christ,  which includes living the way  Jesus told us  to live.     God’s love for us  will never change,  because we are His beloved children.     But,  if we reject His love,  He will not force us  to live  in the truth.     If we refuse  to live in the truth,  we will have to face the consequences.

The only way  we will ever obtain  the true peace and joy  of being complete  within ourselves  is to come  to know the LORD God Almighty  as our heavenly Father — and His Son,  Jesus Christ,  our Savior.     When we know  who we are — the children of God — we will sincerely desire  to imitate all the goodness  of our heavenly Father.

Then,  we will be enabled  to remember Peter’s instructions  in 1 Peter 1:17-19.

And if you address  as Father  the One who impartially judges  according to each man’s work,  conduct yourselves in fear  during the time  of your stay upon earth;  knowing  that you were not redeemed  with perishable things  like silver or gold  from your futile way  of life  inherited from your forefathers,  but with precious blood,  as of a lamb unblemished  and spotless,  the blood of Christ.

For the sake  of God’s love  in Jesus Christ,  we strive to live  in His word.     Love,  truth, and faith  are what binds us  to our heavenly Father.

As we remember  our heavenly Father,  we will be enabled  to honestly and joyfully sing,  “Hallelujah!     Thank You LORD,  for Your wondrous love.”
