When I Consider Thy Heavens

September 16, 2018

When I Consider Thy Heavens

When we get away  from city lights,  out on a clear,  dark night,  we can see billions  of stars.    They are so great and awesome,  but they are only a tiny fraction  of what is really out there.     The Hubble telescope can see so much more  than we ever imagined before.     Beyond what Hubble can detect,  no one has a clue  what is out there.     What we can see tells  of a majesty and power,  synchronization  and vastness  that reveals intelligent planning  and unimaginable wisdom.

King David was in awe  of the greatness  of God’s creation.     In Psalm 8:3-4,  he said,

When I consider Thy heavens,  the work  of Thy fingers,
The moon and the stars,  which Thou hast ordained;
What is man,  that Thou dost  take thought  of him?

In all of creation,  we are just a speck  on a small planet.     Our earthly life is so short compared  to all the time   the stars and planets have been around.     And yet,  we have been given a soul  and a mind — the ability  to do either good  or evil.

God’s almighty power  and intelligence,  ability and wisdom  can be seen  in all  of His creation.     He is greater  than anything He has made.     In spite  of all that,  Isaiah 53:4-6  shows a bit more  about the mind-boggling ways  of the LORD.    It says,

Surely our griefs  He Himself bore,
And our sorrows  He carried;
Yet  we ourselves  esteemed Him  stricken,
Smitten of God,  and afflicted.
But  He was pierced through  for our transgressions,
He was crushed  for our iniquities;
The chastening  for our well-being fell  upon Him,
And by His scourging  we are healed.
All of us  like sheep  have gone astray,
Each of us  has turned  to his own way;
But  the LORD has caused  the iniquity  of us all
To fall  on Him.

The almighty Lord of lords  and God of gods  came to us,  to take upon Himself  the punishment  we deserve.     As Jesus was scourged,  beaten,  mocked,  and spit upon,  no one figured  that He was going through all that  to pay  for our sins.     As He hung  on the cross,  those who crucified Him  thought this was God striking Him  for His own sins — even though Jesus was sinless  and no one could honestly figure out  what His sin might be.

All of this reveals  the absolute perfection  of the LORD.     He is so powerful  that He created all things — but,  in the same breath,  He is so humble,  He condescended  to come  to this tiny earth  to become a real man,  to suffer and die  for our sins.     That is humbleness  beyond compare.     The Almighty is humble.

If we ever dare  to question God’s love  for us,  we need  to look  at how He humbled Himself  and died a human death,  just because  He wants us  to be cleansed  and able  to enter heaven.     In God’s love and wisdom,  all He asks  of us  is that we have faith  and repent  of our sins.

Repenting of our sins  and letting God come  into our hearts  is another miracle.     We need  to pray  for this miracle  and let God complete His work  in us.     Then we will be called  the children  of God.

Joyfully letting God create  within us  a clean heart  and right spirit,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD,  Your love  is awesome.     In Your love and power,  You do all things  for us.     Thank You  for washing away  all my sins.”
