God Has Shut Up All in Disobedience

October 5, 2018

God Has Shut Up All in Disobedience

Sometimes we can feel pretty discouraged  with all the sins  of this world  and all our own sins.     There doesn’t seem to be  an answer  and we look  for relief.     But,  Paul shows us a little bit about the workings  of God  within our hearts  in Romans 11:32,  where he says,

For  God has shut up all  in disobedience  that He might  show mercy  to all.

Everyone of us needs  to see  that the Fall of Adam and Eve  has affected everything  on earth.     We are all locked up  in our sinful natures — and will remain there  until we learn  to look to the LORD  for the mercy we need.

But,  we all  have a will  and a stubbornness  that wants to be righteous  all through our own efforts.     We want  to boldly claim  that we have complete control  over our lives  and are able  to perform everything necessary  to open the doors  of heaven  for ourselves.     That is pride.     Pride  is what led Satan  to rebel against God.

Therefore,  in patient mercy,  God needs to teach us  that we are not  in control  of all things.     He alone is  in control.     So,  “God has shut up all  in disobedience.”     The sin around us  and in our hearts  leads us  into further sin.     Sin traps us  and seeks to defeat us.     And so,  we struggle.

We struggle until we learn  to look to the LORD  for mercy  in Jesus Christ.     Looking to the LORD  is a confession  of our sins and a repentance.     It is humbly bowing our hearts  before God  and admitting  that only He is  in control  of all things.     Looking to the LORD  is also a praising  of our Savior and God  for His merciful salvation  in Jesus Christ.     In other words,  we admit our helplessness  and our total dependence  on God’s authority  over all things.

That is why Paul broke out in praise  as he continued  in Romans 11:33-36,

Oh,  the depth  of the riches  both of the wisdom  and knowledge  of God!     How unsearchable  are His judgments  and unfathomable  His ways!

For  who has known  the mind of the LORD,  or who became  His counselor?  or  who has first given  to Him  that it might be paid back  to him again?

For from Him  and through Him  and to Him  are all things.     To Him  be the glory  forever.     Amen.

God doesn’t  “owe”  us anything.     But,  we owe Him our all.     He made us.     We did not make ourselves.     There isn’t anything  in which we are wiser  than the LORD.     God knows  what He is doing.

Do we know  what we are doing?

Hopefully,  what we are doing  is according to  the love  and wisdom  and salvation  that God, our heavenly Father,  presents us with.     Let us  “let God”  be merciful to us — and wash away our sins  in Jesus Christ — that we may live forever.

Then,  in freedom,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  blessed be Your patient love  and mercy  towards all of us,  as we follow Your leading  through this dark world  to our home  in heaven.”
