Receive the Word Implanted

The apostle James had a way  of getting down  to the nitty-gritty  of matters  in our lives.     He always got  to the heart  of our lives  and our need  for salvation.     Our salvation is a gift  from God  and in James 1:18-21,  James tells us  how we should receive  this gift,

In the exercise  of His will  He brought us forth  by the word  of truth,  so that we might be,  as it were,  the first fruits  among His creatures.

This you know,  my beloved brethren.     But  let every one  be quick to hear,  slow to speak  and slow to anger;  for the anger of man  does not  achieve  the righteousness  of God.

Therefore  putting aside  all filthiness  and all that remains  of wickedness,  in humility  receive the word implanted,  which is able  to save your souls.

James is first pointing out  that God thought enough about us  to set down the truth  in front of us.      So,  here we are  with the truth  about life and death,  heaven and hell.     What are we going to do  about this truth?

Are we going to get all mad  and upset  because some preacher described  our pet sins  and said  that those sins  will surely put us  in hell?     James knows  how people feel  when sin and hell  are talked about.     We all have a natural reaction  of bristling up  and spouting off  that it is no one else’s business  what we do  with our lives.

But,  James points out  that  “the anger of man  does not achieve  the righteousness  of God.”     God is trying  to do us  some real good here.     If all we do  is get torqued  and stomp away,  God cannot give us the gift  of pure righteousness  through faith  in Jesus Christ.     If we’re going  to get mad,  we’re throwing away our gift  of eternal life  in heaven.

So,  we need  to step on the brakes  and cool it.     Think about what our anger is doing  to harm us eternally.     It’s not worth it.     Our anger isn’t proving anything  except that we’re refusing  to face the truth  about heaven  and hell.

As we get a grip  on the reality  of our situation,  we need  to follow James’ advice,  “Therefore putting aside  all filthiness  and all that remains  of wickedness,  in humility  receive the word implanted,  which is able  to save your souls.”

In all eternity  in heaven,  we will be ever so grateful  for having followed James’ advice.     As we let our sins  all be washed away  through faith  in Jesus Christ  we are relieved  of our heavy burden  of sin.     Then we say,  “Hallelujah!     My Lord,  Your truths free us  here and now!”

Love,
Margaret
