He Is My Brother and Sister

October 26, 2018

He Is My Brother and Sister

People appreciate  having a close relationship  with someone.     That’s why people have the saying,  “They stick together  like brothers.”      Matthew 12:46-50,  reveals something special  about having a close relationship  with Jesus.     It says,

While He was still speaking  to the multitudes,  behold,  His mother and His brothers were standing outside,  seeking to speak  to Him.

And someone said  to Him,  “Behold,  Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside,  seeking to speak  to You.”

But He answered the one  who was telling Him  and said,  “Who is My mother  and who are My brothers?     And stretching out His hand  toward His disciples,  He said,  “Behold,  My mother  and My brothers!     For whoever shall do the will  of My Father  who is in heaven,  he is My brother  and sister  and mother.”

Jesus was not being disrespectful  towards His mother.     In their close relationship,  we need to remember  how Mary was always very mindful  of everything  that took place  when Jesus was born — and,  we need to remember  how Jesus provided  for His mother’s care  even while He was being crucified.

What Jesus was pointing out is  that spiritual relationships  are just as binding  as blood relationships.     Jesus was showing everyone  how we can all be  a spiritual family together.     The one thing  that binds us  into the family of God is  doing God’s will.

What is the will  of God?     John says  our heavenly Father wants us  to receive  ( believe in ) Jesus as our Savior.     In John 1:12,  it says,

But as many as received Him,  to them  He gave the right  to become children of God,  even to those  who believe  in His name.

When people were asking Jesus  what they should be doing  to please God,  they were wondering  what the will of God was  for them.    In John 6:29,  Jesus told them,

This is the work  of God,  that you believe  in Him  whom He has sent.

And,  of course,  when one seriously believes something,  they act  according to their belief.     So,  Paul wrote  in 1 Thessalonians 4:3,

For this is the will  of God,  your sanctification…

As we believe,  we become Jesus’ brother and sister,  and we want  to act  like Jesus’ brother and sister.     That is working our sanctification — becoming more and more  like Jesus  in our living.

In our close relationship  with Christ Jesus  we have peace and joy  because it is so special  to know Him  as our spiritual brother.     Then we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord Jesus,  my Brother,  thank You  for showing me  Your truths,  Your way,  and the true life.”
