Even When I Am Old and Gray

December 4, 2018

Even When I Am Old and Gray

It is birthday party time.     All the residents  in this small nursing home  are in their mid nineties and reminisce  about how God has cared  for them  through their years of troubles and joys.     They readily admit  they cannot remember the names  of all their great-grandchildren.     Some know they have great-grandchildren,  but they don’t know how many.

Children and people  of all ages  are milling about the party  as they stop by  to give Grandma or Great Grandma a kiss and a  “Happy Birthday”  hug.     The birthday Grandma sighed,  “I think that’s one of my great-grandchildren,  but I’m not sure.”     Then we can laugh.     In spite  of a long life filled with fears and  tears,  sadnesses and joys,  successes and failures,  God has always been nearby  to strengthen and comfort them  in their needs.

Satisfied in God’s love,  they can agree  with the aged writer  of Psalm 71,  as he wrote  in verses 17-19,

O God,  Thou hast taught me  from my youth;
And I still declare  Thy wondrous deeds.
And  even when  I am old and gray,  O God,  do not forsake me,
Until I declare  Thy strength  to this generation,
Thy power  to all who are to come.
For Thy righteousness,  O God,  reaches to the heavens,
Thou who hast done great things;
O God,  who is like Thee?

Then I saw one of the Great Grandma’s reasons for satisfaction.    As I scanned the room  for a place to sit  and eat birthday cake and ice cream,  a twelve-year-old great-grandson jumped up  from his seat  and said,  “Here,  please!     Have this seat!”     I thanked him,  but said he also needed a place  to eat his lunch.     But then,  he insisted,  saying,  “I and the other kids will go outside and sit  on the porch.”

Where did such consideration come from?     This young boy was reflecting  the same love and respect  that all of his elders were showing  in their love  for the birthday Grandma.     Grandma was living well  with the purpose  of declaring God’s wondrous deeds…….

Until I declare Thy strength  to this generation,
Thy power  to all who are to come.

What are we declaring  to all around us?     Do our actions reflect  our heavenly Father’s love  in Jesus Christ,  our Savior?     Are we declaring  God’s wondrous deeds?

A reality check  should show us  the right way.

Then,  in the peace  of God’s loving care,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  You are faithful  in all Your works.     Lead me to be Your faithful witness,  that the generations to come may know  how wondrous Your love and salvation  in Jesus Christ are.”
