An Inheritance

An Inheritance
Have you ever received an inheritance? Maybe it was in the form of land, a house, money, or some other item that was special to you and the deceased. Some of the little special things we’ve inherited include World War II memorabilia, marbles my Dad received for Christmas during the time he spent in an orphanage in the late 1800’s, books, cuff links, hat pins, pictures, keys, crocheted items, etc., all from the 1800’s and early 1900’s. To me, it’s all nostalgic and brings back many memories, so I enjoy displaying these items in a curio cabinet.
None of this “stuff” will have the same value to whoever inherits our belongings after we die. All of this inheritance will continue to deteriorate and will soon be gone forever. We can’t take any of it with us upon our death. As Job 1:21 says,
Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
And naked I shall return there.
The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away.
Blessed be the name of the LORD.
The point is that there is nothing on this earth that we get to keep forever……. EXCEPT……. for our promised inheritance from God Almighty. The apostle Peter talks about our special, reserved inheritance in 1 Peter 1:3-5,
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
We do have “an inheritance” that will never rot away or get defiled by the sins in this world. Neither will this inheritance ever fade away into oblivion. It’s actually “reserved in heaven for you.” That means our names have been appointed to receive this wondrous inheritance because of our faith in the merits of Jesus Christ.
This inheritance is worth more than everything in the whole wide world because it is “imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away.” The whole world is going to perish — and this world certainly is defiled with all sorts of gross sins. But, our inheritance from God will last forever and ever and ever, in purity and holiness. There will be no end to all the joys for every single person who puts their faith in Jesus Christ, as our Savior from sin.
We are to continue living as God’s dear children and He will protect us in the true faith until we reach our heavenly home — our inheritance.
We can enjoy whatever blessings God allows us here on earth, but in the same breath, we need to always remember that everything here is a passing thing. There’s no sense in setting our hearts on anything in this world. The only worthwhile thing we have is our salvation in Jesus Christ. That will never “fade away.”
Joyfully holding onto our faith, we say, “Hallelujah! Lord, thank You for preparing our inheritance for us in heaven and proving the trustworthiness of Your promise to bring us home.”
Love,
Margaret
