You Shall Call His Name Jesus

December 20, 2018

You Shall Call His Name Jesus

There is great meaning  in the name  “Jesus”  that we should think of  every time we speak His name.     Most every name has a meaning  in the language  that it originated from.     In some groups of peoples,  the name  “Jesus”  is still a popular choice  when naming a baby boy.     But,  this name is even more significant  for our Savior.

In the first chapter of Matthew  we read about how an angel appeared  to Joseph  and told him about Mary’s pregnancy being  of the Holy Spirit.     Then,  in Matthew 1:21,  the angel said,

And she will bear a Son;  and you shall call His name  Jesus   for it is He  who will save His people  from their sins.

In this way,  it was actually God  who determined the name  of our Savior — you shall call His name Jesus.”     God even gave the reason  for naming this baby  “Jesus” — “it is He  who will save His people  from their sins.”

In the Hebrew language,  Jesus literally means,  “Jehovah is salvation“.     This is God’s way  of giving us a daily reminder  that only Jesus saves us  from all our sins.     Jesus is God  in the flesh,  coming  just as He said He would  to take away  all our sins.

For every time we hear the name  “Jesus”,  let us think  about how He is Jehovah,  our eternal salvation.     What good reason  to use the name of Jesus  with reverence  and honor.     There is no other savior — no other way  to eternal life.

Because God loves us so much,  He willingly became a man,  so He could be  the perfect sacrifice.     So  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  You use so many little things,  like a name,  to help point us  in the right direction.     Let us use this pointer  to constantly remember Your power  to save us  in Jesus Christ.”
