Silent Night

December 28, 2018

Silent Night

Whatever time of year  the Christ child was actually born,  it was a wondrously miraculous time.    One can be sure that many people throughout the world were  in various turmoils  for all sorts of reasons.     But,  in God’s care  the mother and child were  in a special peace.

We know the shepherds  in one particular field  heard and saw the angels announcing the Savior’s birth.     But,  for the most part,  the world was totally unaware  that the long-promised Redeemer  had actually been born  exactly according to a number  of different prophecies.

People were troubled as they struggled  with their various troubles,  at the very same time  that God’s grace came  to us  in the form  of a tiny baby.     Ever so quietly,  with no one suspecting  what sort of miracle was happening,  Jesus was born.     He was born  to free us from all the sin  we’re entangled in — born to wash away  all the sins  in our past — born to strengthen us  to live in the freedom  of God’s love  and according to His precepts.     God’s redeeming grace is  with us  and  we don’t even know it.

God has a way of coming silently  into our lives,  to lead  and guide us  to our heavenly home.     Let us be still  and think about all  that He has done  for us  in Christ Jesus.    Then we can graciously accept His gift  of grace  and let Him live  in our hearts  as we sing:

Silent night!   Holy night!   All is calm,  all is bright,
Round yon Virgin Mother and Child
Holy Infant,  so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,   sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night!   Holy night!   Shepherds quake  at the sight
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heav’nly hosts sing,  Alleluia,
Christ, the Savior, is born!    Christ, the Savior, is born!

Silent night!   Holy night!   Son of God,  love’s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth,    Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

As we take the time  to realize  just how very beloved we are,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     My Lord,  just as You came  so quietly  into this world  so many years ago,  You still come quietly  into the hearts  of all those  who look to you  in faith.    Come,  Lord Jesus,  and live  in me.”
