If I Hadn’t Been Delighted

If I Hadn’t Been Delighted

We can probably all list a number of things  we are really glad we did.     We recall how  at the time  we weren’t quite sure why we did it,  but it sure turned out  for our benefit.     It might be as simple  as taking the right turn  on the highway,  or a decision  to check out a particular store,  or even a decision  to spend more time studying  for a class,  only to end up being the only student comfortable  with a surprise test  from the teacher.    Another example might be a decision  to slow down  on a wintry highway,  only to soon discover the accident  of those who did not decide  to slow down.

All these so-called  little things  make us glad  in some way or another  that we had made a good decision.     But,  there is another  little decision  that will make a much greater impact  on our comfort,  peace,  and joy.     In Psalm 119:92  we read,

If  I hadn’t been delighted  in Your teaching,
I would have perished  in my misery.

The psalmist had made a simple little decision — to find the good  in God’s word.     He decided  to take time every day  to learn more  about the wonderful things  the LORD has done.     He saw  that everything God said  was good and right,  so he decided  to live by faith  in God’s ways.     And,  it became apparent  that God really does keep  all His promises, so he put his trust  in God’s promises.

In all this,  he delighted  in God’s teachings.    It made a real difference  in his life.     As his heart delighted  in God’s word,  he realized  that he truly enjoyed living  in the ways  of God.     He knew  he was still a sinner,  but he also knew  the Lord’s love and forgiveness  were his.

As he thought  about how deciding  to put his faith  in the Lord  had given him eternal life,  he also realized  that he had escaped the dangers  of living without faith.     He had escaped the futility  of living like the world.     He had escaped the mindlessness  of living in sin — the worry,  misery,  and backbiting  of sin — not to mention hell.

He would have perished eternally  in all the worthlessness  of his sinful living.     Now he was relieved  and ever so glad  he took the right turn  in life — coming to delight  in God’s teaching.     The psalmist wrote  about his experience  so that others down through the ages could also benefit  from making the right turn  in their lives.     It was like he wanted  to put up a big sign  giving directions for us  to learn from.

Just like psalmist,  we can make this good little decision,  and be glad forever.     Turning away  from futility  and turning  to God’s word,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     My Lord,  everything You say  in Your word  is eternally good and right.     With You as our Teacher,  we truly find eternal joy.”

Love,
Margaret
