A Good Understanding

A Good Understanding

There are those  who have received degrees  for their various levels of expertise  in any number of fields.     They hold certificates  for their Bachelor’s degrees,  Master’s degrees,  and their Doctorate degrees.     They might have their expertise  in mechanics,  various therapies,  technologies,  horticulture,  theology of some sort — or whatever.     None of these degrees have eternal value.     They are possibly  of some value only  in the here and now.

We all go  to various experts  when we don’t know how  to resolve a particular problem.     We might not know how  to take care of our own electrical or plumbing problems.     Common sense tells us  to get some expert help  before our problem becomes a huge disaster.

No matter what sort of assistance  we might need,  the expert we meet in that field  might be qualified and able  in that field,  but will be totally lacking  in other fields of expertise — just like us.

No matter who we are  or  where our talent lies,  we all have a common need  for attaining  one particular kind of wisdom.     We might have a doctorate  in medicine or physics,  but without this one  special wisdom  our whole life is a waste.     Psalm 111:10 tells us  about the wisdom  we all surely need.     It says,

The fear  of the LORD  is the beginning of wisdom;
A good understanding  have all those  who  do His commandments;
His praise endures forever.

Whatever our field  of expertise,  do we have  “The fear  of the LORD“,  that is  “the beginning  of wisdom“?     Whatever worldly  expertise we have is usable only here on earth.     No matter who we are,  we all need  “the fear  of the LORD”  that is an eternal wisdom.     Why?

Having a healthy  “fear  of the LORD” means we respect Him,  and that respect  will lead us  to place our faith  in Him — give Him the praise  that is due  to His holy name — and  allow us  an in-depth understanding  of why everything the LORD commands is very, very good  for us.     There is no better understanding than that  in the whole world.

“The fear  of the LORD” leads us  to humbly accept the fact  that Jesus is the fulfillment  of all sorts of Old Testament prophecies,  which means He really does save us  from all  of our sins.     Such a  “fear  of the LORD” will lead us  to use our common sense  in admitting  that the Bible gives us more than enough evidence  that God can be trusted  to keep all His promises.     And,  “the fear  of the LORD” leads us  to see the seriousness  of our sins.    That knowledge makes the difference between eternal life and eternal death.

Everybody needs  “a good understanding”.     Our life depends on it.

With  “a good understanding” we praise our Creator and Redeemer  and say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  thank You  for giving us Your word  and showing us the way  we need to go  in this world.”

Love,
Margaret
