To Turn Away From

To Turn Away From

God’s word is filled with verses  about turning away.     From beginning to end  there is turning away,  and more turning away.     What’s it all about?     It starts with people turning away  from God.     They will turn away from God  by snootily refusing  to listen to His word  any more.     They will refuse  to pray  and even claim  that everything is God’s fault.     They might even boldly say there is no God.     They turn their backs,  raise an eyebrow,  and sneer at anyone who dares  to mention God’s word.     Christians are avoided  like the plague.

They turn away  by following the ways  of the world.     They will turn  to all sorts of philosophies  and false religions,  claiming that these have more to offer  “success bound”  people  than the LORD could ever come up with.     They will put lots of effort  into learning about various philosophies  and false religions,  but refuse  to check out God’s word.     God’s word is just for Bible thumpers, you know.     It’s all kind of embarrassing  to see Christians stand up  for the  “stuff”  in the Bible.

And, they laugh at verses  like Hosea 7:13-14,  where God says,

Woe to them,  for they have strayed  from Me!
Destruction is theirs,  for they have rebelled  against Me!
I would redeem them,  but  they speak lies against Me,
And they do not cry  to Me  from their heart
When they wail  on their beds;
For the sake of grain and new wine  they assemble themselves,
They  turn away from  Me.

What should the world think?     They haven’t met up  with destruction — yet.     Who is the LORD  to claim  that they are insincere  in their wailing?     Who is the LORD  to claim  they have strayed? …….    So,  as the world blithely goes on its way,  they are sure they know better  than anyone else  who is preaching the gospel.     They are confident and arrogant  about not listening  to the word of God.     Oh, oh…….

Something is not being taken  into account.     They are not remembering  how God has kept all  of His promises  in the Old Testament  about a Savior from sin.     All those  “old” prophecies came true  in Jesus Christ.     That is a hint.

The apostle Peter has a word to say  to those who know  “about”  our Savior,  but have decided they prefer the ways  of the world.     2 Peter 2:20-22  tells us,

For  if after they have escaped  the defilements  of the world  by the knowledge  of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,  they are again  entangled in them  and are overcome,  the last state  has become worse for them  than the first.

For it would be better for them  not to have known the way  of righteousness,  than having known it,  to turn away from  the holy commandment  delivered  to them.

It has happened  to them  according to the true proverb,  “A dog returns to its own vomit,”  and,  “A sow,  after washing,  returns to wallowing  in the mire.”

It’s easy to see  that Peter is very adamant  about this subject.     It’s self-destructive  to turn away  from our Creator and Redeemer,  who has proven His trustworthiness and faithfulness.

So,  what are we to do  when we find ourselves  slipping  away  from the LORD?     We are to turn back  to Him  with our whole hearts,  confess our sins,  and let His grace wash them away  in the blood of Jesus.     God has promised  that He won’t turn anyone away.     So great is His love  for us.

Always aware  of our weaknesses,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Abba,  Father,  You have proven  that our salvation is only through Your grace,  by faith  in Jesus Christ.     Create in us  clean hearts  that are fully open  to Your truths  in the Bible.     Keep us from going astray.”

Love,
Margaret
