Contend Earnestly

Contend Earnestly

If we’re in a contest or sport  of any kind  and put absolutely no effort  into winning,  chances are  we definitely won’t win.     If we’re  in a situation  where people are trying wrongly  to force their version  of political correctness  upon us,  and we make no effort  to stand up  for what is ethically right  in God’s eyes,  chances are  wrong will prevail  and get stronger.     If we’re  in a social situation  where our “friends” are trying  to get us to do something wrong  and we meekly cave in  to their pressures,  chances are  our fall into sin  will lead us down  some awfully wrong paths.

Churches today  are being challenged  by liberalism  of all sorts.     It used to be  that all churches held onto the biblical account  of creation.     Now,  liberals are forcing the theory  of evolution  onto the churches.     It used to be  that all churches most strongly held  onto the very clear teachings of sexuality,  as taught throughout the Bible.     But now,  sexual deviants  of all sorts  are pushing their ways  onto the churches  as they have gradually and deviously usurped church leadership  over the years.

As a result,  quite a number of congregations  and individuals  have separated themselves  from their larger church body,  as they are  “contending earnestly”  for the true faith  as handed down to us  in the Bible — God’s word  to His people.     At first,  these people  felt helpless  as liberal teachings took over their leadership,  because they had no voice  in what was being taught.     But,  now that they have been pushed  beyond the limits  of their endurance,  they have chosen  to leave the liberal church  and stick  to biblical teachings.

Liberalism is definitely not a new problem.     The early church faced it also.     The whole book of Jude is about the liberalism that was trying to force its way  into the church.     So, we read  in Jude 3-4,

I felt the necessity  to write to you  appealing that you  contend earnestly  for the faith which was  once for all delivered  to the saints.

For certain persons  have crept in unnoticed,  those who were long beforehand  marked out  for this condemnation,  ungodly persons  who turn the grace  of our God  into licentiousness and  deny our  only Master and Lord,  Jesus Christ.

God’s word has forewarned us  in a number of places  that  all sorts of efforts will be made  to destroy the true faith  that has been given us  throughout the Bible.     These people will pretend  to be good Christians,  but are actually out  to destroy God’s truth,  as given to us  in His word.     Jude points out  that the true faith  “was  once for all  delivered  to the saints.”     Nobody has a right  to try to change  what the Bible has distinctly taught us.     There is to be no  “new way”  of interpreting God’s word to make it fit a liberal agenda.

We have God’s word to us.     Let us open it up  and learn it well,  so we won’t be bamboozled  into false teachings.     If we don’t bother  to learn God’s word,  there is no way  we will be able  to “contend earnestly” for the truth  of our whole salvation  in Jesus Christ.

What might we lose?     It could be our souls.

In the true freedom  that Christ gives us  in His word,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Our Savior,  open up our hearts and minds  to know You  in the right way.     Strengthen us  to rightly  “contend earnestly” for the whole marvelous salvation we have  through faith  in You.”

Love,
Margaret
