God of gods and LORD of lords

Sometimes as people face their many and much varied trials,  they might wonder  if God is really God.     One might look at other people  and  imagine  they are better off than Christians.     They  seem  richer,  more successful,  brighter,  more sophisticated,  more in control of their lives.     These  “other people”  seem to follow a philosophy,   another religion,  or are rather atheistic.     Christians facing particularly difficult times might  then tend  to wonder  if God is really God.

In Deuteronomy 10:17,  Moses taught the Israelites,

The LORD your God  is the God of gods  and the Lord of lords,  the great,  the mighty,  and the awesome  God  who does not show partiality,  nor take a bribe.

Then,  Psalm 136:2-3  sings out,

Give thanks  to the God of gods,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
Give thanks  to the Lord of lords,
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.

Then,  when Paul was instructing Timothy  in 1 Timothy 6:14-16,  he strongly says,

Keep the commandment  without stain  or reproach,  until the appearing  of our Lord Jesus Christ,  which He will bring about  at the proper time — He who is the blessed and only Sovereign,  the King of kings  and Lord of lords;  who alone possesses immortality  and dwells in unapproachable light;  whom no man has seen or can see.     To Him be honor  and eternal dominion!     Amen.

Paul declares all this because he had studied all  of scripture  and fully realized  that Jesus really was the fulfillment  of all the Old Testament prophecies  about the Savior.     It is totally impossible  for any other human being  to fulfill so many different prophecies  written by many different prophets  so very many years apart.     This is something to think about  when we are tempted  with doubts.

Then,  in these times,  it is comforting  to hear the assurance  of a promise.    The apostle John gives that to us  in Revelation 17:14,  as he refers to the many evils  that will take place  in the last days.    He says,

These will wage war  against the Lamb,  and the Lamb will overcome them,  because He is Lord of lords and King of kings,  and those who are with Him  are the called  and chosen  and faithful.

Jesus is the  Lamb of God,  who will overcome all evil forces  for us.     Those who are with Him are the called  and chosen  and faithful”.     With this assurance of victory,  we need to ask ourselves  whose side we’re on.     Are with siding  with Jesus,  or with the various evils  that will be overcome by Him?

As we consider that,  we can also think about a small part  of John’s description  of Jesus’ victory ride  in Revelation 19:16,  where he says,

And on His robe and on His thigh  He has a name written,  “KING OF KINGS,  AND LORD OF LORDS.”

When we side with Jesus now,  we need to remember  that we are on the winning side.     All the evils  that are in rebellion  against salvation in Jesus Christ alone will be destroyed forever.     The LORD is the victor  because He alone is the Creator  of all things.     There is absolutely nothing  that can compare  with the awesome power  of the LORD God Almighty.

And this LORD God Almighty has let us know  that His children are to go through some mighty tough trials  to refine their faith  and make them strong  in the truth.     Let us hold fast  to our Creator and Redeemer  without flinching.

Knowing the love of God will never fail us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  thank You  for being our victory  through faith  in Jesus Christ.”

Love,
Margaret
