Thy Vows Are Binding Upon Me, O God

Thy Vows Are Binding Upon Me, O God

Hard times and scary situations can make us feel  all alone and totally unprotected.     David could have felt that way  when the Philistines had seized him  in Gath.     But,  in his probability of death  at the hands of the enemies,  David set his oppressed heart and mind  to remembering.     David remembered  how God had Samuel anoint him  to be the next king of Israel.     God had promised  to care for David.

Since God is holy  and cannot lie,  we can be certain  that He will keep all  of His promises to us.     So,  David’s heart sang  in Psalm 56:12-13,

Thy vows are binding  upon me,  O God;
I will render thank offerings  to Thee.
For Thou  hast delivered my soul  from death,
Indeed  my feet  from stumbling,
So that  I may walk before God
In the light  of the living.

Whatever sorts of trials and dangers  we may face,  we also can sing  right alongside David,  “Thy vows are binding upon me,  O God”.     Some might dejectedly wonder,  “What promise has God made  regarding me?”     Hebrews 13:5-6  reminds us,

For He Himself  has said,  “I will never desert you,  nor will I ever  forsake you,”  so that we  confidently say,  “The LORD  is my helper,  I will not  be afraid.     What shall man do to me?”

The writer of Hebrews was quoting Deuteronomy 31:6 and Psalm 118:6  when he wrote that.     God’s word is eternal.     This is the way God feels  about all who put their trust  in Him.     All of our Lord’s vows concerning us  are binding upon us.     God has unequivocally promised  that all who confess their sins and believe  in Jesus  shall be saved.     We have no honest reason  to doubt that.     God has promised  that He will never leave us.     So,  we can rest assured  we are not alone  in any trial  we need to face.     God is right beside us.     As we keep looking  to His promises,  He will keep us from stumbling  into sin  and He will strengthen us  to walk  in His ways — “In the light of the living”

Jesus is the Light  that shows us God’s ways  in this dark,  sin-filled world.     Because Jesus gives us the light  that grants faith,  hope,  and love,  we can treasure the salvation He gives  and that grants us  eternal life.

God’s vows certainly are binding  upon each of us.     We need  to let His love  and many promises strengthen us  to walk the walk  and talk the talk.     Then  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  we are so glad  that You can be trusted  to keep all  of Your word to us.     Only You  have the power  to keep Your every promise.”

Love,
Margaret
