Not We Ourselves

May 29, 2019

Not We Ourselves

There is a great comfort  in understanding our relationship  with God Almighty.     We can look around us  and see so many wonders of creation  and realize  that there is absolutely no way  we could create any of it.     We consider the delicate beauty  of flowers,  butterflies,  a newborn fawn,  and a glorious dawn.     And then,  we think about the shortness  of our lives  and our lack of control  over it.

Then we can sing  with the psalmist  in Psalm 100:3,

Know that the LORD Himself  is God;
It is  He who has made us,  and not we ourselves;
We are His people  and the sheep of His pasture.

Nothing will ever change that fact.     It is only the LORD  who made us  and all of creation.     We have no control  over the weather,  earthquakes,  or a falling star.     It’s all God’s creation  and He alone  has control  over every bit of it.     And all that is very good  because of another truth found  in Psalm 121:2,

My help comes  from the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth.

The LORD  who made us  is really the only One  who can help us  when we need help.     Everybody needs help  in all sorts of situations.     No matter how intelligent  a person thinks he is,  no matter how powerful,  rich,  or famous,  we all need help.     There is not a one of us  who made himself.     We are the created — not the Creator.     We have to die  and face the judgment — but,  “My help comes  from the LORD”.

There are tons of people  writing self-help books  of all sorts  these days.      They all proclaim  to have found yet another way for us  to get our lives into gear,  so that we are sure to succeed.     They all promise happiness  to everyone  who follows their fix’em up advice  for our personal lives.     But, everyone’s life remains  pretty much the same.     Nobody is honestly happier — not even the author,  who has his own problems in life.

In all this,  we need to remember,  “The LORD Himself  is God;  it is He who has made us,  and not we ourselves.”

The One  who made us  is the only one  who knows  how to fix us.     All real power is His and only His.

That is why we can rejoice  and be glad  as we go  to the LORD of lords  for all the fixing we need.     His fix’em up job won’t be  to give us lots of money,  power over others,  or  perfect heath.     Instead,  He will give us a true faith,  hope,  and love  as we accept the wonder  of salvation  in Jesus Christ alone,  and realize  that through faith  we are, indeed,  the beloved children  of God.     He made us  and He can fix us,  giving us all the joys and glories  of eternal life.     That is much better  than the world’s weak, pretentious goals  and efforts.

Knowing that,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  all things are from You  and through You  and for You.     So work in our lives  that we might know the joys  of living and working for You.”
