Power and Love and Discipline

Everyone who believes  in Jesus  and strives to live  according to His word  is a disciple of Jesus.     We are all learners,  pupils,  and followers of the Lord,  who suffered,  died,  and rose again  for our salvation.     As we live  according to what we have learned  from God’s word,  we are witnesses — every one of us.     The world looks at our witness and evaluates the LORD God Almighty,  based on what we seem  to be like  to them.

For the sake  of the salvation  of everyone around us,  we need  to let God’s love  guide our being and actions,  which often is not easy  because we can get scared,  having doubts and fears  as we face our challenges  for the day.     When the world sees this,  they might interpret our Savior wrongly.     That is why Paul needed  to instruct young Timothy  in 2 Timothy 1:7-9,

For God has not given us  a spirit of timidity,  but of power and love and discipline.

Therefore  do not be ashamed  of the testimony  of our Lord,  or of me  His prisoner;  but join with me  in suffering  for the gospel  according to the power of God,  who has saved us,  and called us  with a holy calling,  not according to our works,  but according to His own purpose  and grace  which was granted us  in Christ Jesus  from all eternity.

When we live  for Christ,  we are not living  for any of the miserly, passing things  of this world.     We’re not living  for the weaknesses  of sinful mankind.     We are living for the eternal LORD God Almighty,  Creator,  Sustainer,  and Redeemer  of this world.     We are living  for the truth  of our existence  and eternal salvation.     That is why we can afford to be bold.

We have no real reason  to be ashamed  of the almighty Creator and Redeemer.     He’s the One  who made us  and keeps us alive.     He’s the One  who has loved us  so that He sent Jesus  to redeem us  from our sins.     If anything, we should be ashamed  of our timidity  in sticking to the truth.

But,  in all this,  Paul reminds us all  that we have a  “holy calling,  not according to our works,  but according to His own purpose and grace.”     God has called every single one  of His children  to be a witness  in whatever position  they may be in.     It does not matter  if we are a housewife,  a president,  a garbage collector,  or a CEO.     We are all in a position  to witness  with our whole lives,  where ever we are.

Our witness is to people  in the same boat as we are.     We are all sinners  in need  of a Savior.     The people we witness to may be rich or poor,  young or old,  strong or weak.     None of that matters.     Sinners are sinners.     Everybody needs eternal salvation,  but few are willing  to accept it — possibly based on how or if we bother  to witness.     As Jesus says  in Matthew 7:14,

For the gate is small,  and the way is narrow  that leads to life,  and few  are those who find it.

But,  we can help someone  to find it.     Instead of being timid  about our witness,  we need to bow  before our Savior  and pray  for His spirit  “of power  and love  and discipline”,  so that we might rightly stand  in His eternal truth.

Remembering God’s love for us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     Lord,  You freed us  from all our sins  and have granted us  eternal life.     Help us to witness  to others  so that they too may be freed  unto salvation.”

Love,
Margaret
