A Few Things Are Necessary
We are so very easily discombobulated. It doesn’t take all that much to get us to worry and fret — tearing hairs. What can we do when just everything that can go wrong goes wrong? We feel so defeated. Nothing seems to help.
We need to remember what Jesus has taught us. He is God Almighty and He knows what we need in our helplessness. We need to learn from the account given us in Luke 10:38-42,
He entered a certain village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. And she had a sister called Mary, who moreover was listening to the Lord’s word, seated at His feet.
But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him, and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.”
But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only a few things are necessary, really only one, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”
Let’s face it, we are often distracted with all that goes on in life — and we complain, just like Martha. It just seems that everything is out of control and there isn’t anything we can do about it…….. But, Jesus says there is. Jesus tells us, today, “only a few things are necessary, really only one.”
We need to simplify the flood of never-ending problems we have.
Contrary to how we feel about things, there really, truly is “only one” thing that is honestly “necessary”. We might be too worked up to even want to think about that “one” thing. It just seems like another added “thing”. But, when it comes down to the nuts and bolts of everything, it is not an added “thing”. It is the only thing “necessary”.
We need God’s words in our lives. We need to remember what God has said to us about all sorts of things regarding our measly lives on this earth. And, that can be awfully hard in our circumstances — not just “can be” — it IS hard. We are human and weak.
But, in all our humanity, we need to go to God. We need to go to His word and just rest in it. We need to abide in His word, so that, He can abide in us. Riled complaining does not center on God’s love for us. Complaints are self-centered. We need to center on God’s love for us in Jesus Christ. We need to remember how beloved we are — and how our Lord said ahead of time that we would be having all sorts of trials to endure.
He didn’t say it would be easy. He just told us to persevere in faith, hope, and love — a love that listens to His word and obeys it.
In that frame, we say, “Lord, please lead us to always sit at Your feet and learn from You, moment by moment, how You want us to live for You.”
Love,
Margaret
