They Wandered in the Wilderness
Sometimes we feel like we’re just going in circles — getting nowhere fast. There doesn’t seem to be anything in life that is satisfying. We’ve tried everything — climbing the success ladder, all sorts of philosophies, all sorts of learning, religions, parties, different friends, different “stuff”, different recreations — you name it. We’ve tried everything. Nothing satisfies. Nothing fills this seeming void.
In a poetic way, the psalmist describes this very problem. This feeling of wandering around in circles and getting nowhere fast has plagued people down through the ages. In the Psalm 107, the “desert regions” are all the wasteful things we’ve tried in life to gain a feeling of satisfaction. Everything dry and fruitless that we’ve tried has not satisfied our hungering and thirsting. Where is our answer? Psalm 107:4-9, poetically pictures our problem and its answer,
They wandered in the wilderness in a desert region;
They did not find a way to an inhabited city.
They were hungry and thirsty;
Their soul fainted within them.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble;
He delivered them out of their distresses.
He led them also by a straight way,
To go to an inhabited city.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness,
And for His wonders to the sons of men!
For He has satisfied the thirsty soul,
And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good.
When we want satisfaction in life, it will not be found in worldly things, because our very deepest needs are spiritual. It is our soul that is thirsting and hungering. Our soul needs to find the city of God, where we can rest and be filled with the wonders of God’s salvation in Jesus Christ.
As we futilely try to find satisfaction in worldly things, we discover that everything is always changing, and that nothing is what it was made out to be. Climbing the success ladder is a dog-eat-dog world. All the other stuff gets old and burdensome.
But, when we cry out to the LORD in all our troubles, He will deliver us. He has been lovingly waiting for us to turn to Him. He wants to put us on the “straight way” to our heavenly home, in the city inhabited by all the saints who have lived down through the ages — not to mention all the angels.
It is a marvelous wonder how God is able to satisfy our thirsting and hungering souls, and fill us with all His goodness and righteousness in Jesus Christ. We can call out to Him today. We don’t have to wait for anything.
Glad that we don’t have to wander in the worldly wilderness any more, we say, “Hallelujah! LORD, the straight road of Your salvation in Jesus Christ leads to heaven. Knowing that we are on our way to heaven, gives us the joy and hope of having a real home with You.”
Love,
Margaret
