Thy Statutes Are My Songs

Thy Statutes Are My Songs

Often when people hear about God,  all they can think of  is rules,  rules,  rules  — – no joy  —  just obey  or face judgment.      That is a very sad misunderstanding  of God.     Our Lord and Creator  is holy,  perfect in all ways,  almighty,  and wise   far beyond our comprehension.      Being holy and perfect in love,  our Savior wants us  to learn love honestly  and sincerely.

That’s what the ten commandments teach us.      “You shall have no other gods”  is simply telling us  to face the fact  that there is no other real god.      To have other gods is to willingly live a lie.      “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God”  shows us  that it is only right and good  to give honor and respect  where honor and respect are due.      “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy”  gives us the day of rest  that our souls  and bodies  need.      That is how we are made.      Taking this time  to be strengthened in God’s word  is a necessity  for facing the temptations  in this world.

“Honor your father and mother”  helps us to accept God’s will  in setting others  in authority over us.      It helps us to trust God’s wisdom  and order  of all things.      “You shall not murder”  teaches us a love  and respect  for life  so that all our thoughts,  words,  and deeds  show the same kind of love  our Lord has shown us.

“You shall not commit adultery”  teaches us  that our word and behavior  should be  as honorable  and holy  in love  as God is towards us.      “You shall not steal”  teaches  us to be content  with what we have,  trusting the Lord  to care for our real needs.

“You shall not give false testimony”   shows the sharp contrast  between truth and lies,  good and evil.      We do good to ourselves  when we choose truth  and goodness.     “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house…. wife… or anything that belongs to your neighbor”  teaches us  to not tempt ourselves.      We can cause ourselves  to fall into sin  by dwelling on covetous thoughts.

All of these commandments are so good and right  for us  and everyone around us.      So,  what is not to love?      What is not to long for  and enjoy living in?      When these are a part of our lives,  we are doing good  to ourselves  and everyone  we come in contact with.

With an understanding of the beauty  and purity  of these commandments,  and all of God’s word to us,  the psalmist sang  in Psalm 119:54-56,

Thy statutes are my songs
In the house  of my pilgrimage.
O LORD,  I remember Thy name in the night,
And keep Thy law.
This has become mine,
That I observe Thy precepts.

This psalmist was being  derided and mocked  by unbelievers when he wrote Psalm 119.      He was no stranger  to the evils  of those who reject the LORD  and Savior.     That’s why he called this world  “the house of my pilgrimage”.      We are just traveling through  this world,  on our way  to our eternal home.      We’re headed  for the place where everything is holy,  good,  right,  and true  —  the place of no more tears.

Because this world is not our home,  we can sing with the psalmist,  “Thy statutes are my songs”,  as we rejoice in the lessons  of a true love  —  that give us a picture  of the peace and goodness  that will be ours  in all eternity.      Then we say,  “Hallelujah!      LORD,  all Your ways are so beautifully good  and right.      Thank You  for teaching us  in Your word,  as we travel home.”
