What Is a Man Profited?
We often work so hard for so many different things. Some put all their efforts into earning money, others want fame, and others want prestige. When they have gained their original goals, they want more. Multi-billionaires have been noted to say, “I just want to see how much more I can get.” So, their every day is totally spent in all-out efforts to be impressive — better than anyone else — king of the hill.
Their families suffer; they do underhanded things to gain more; but, worst of all — they leave God out of the picture of their lives. Totally disregarding God, they can think of nothing but their worldly goals — as if they will be able to take all this stuff with them when they die.
Because we are all so easily distracted in gaining the things of this world, Jesus says in Luke 9:25,
For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself?
We can be the richest, most famous person in this world, but if we lose our souls in eternal damnation, how can we say we have gained anything worthwhile? All our efforts and hard work are down the drain when we die. Who will there be in hell who will envy us for all that we gained while on earth?
Those who put all their efforts into working for the things of this world are ashamed of Jesus Christ. They don’t want to be under anyone else’s rule — – not even God’s — so, they shut Him out of their lives. Pride is ruling their lives. If they were to worship Christ as Lord, they would be admitting they are sinners — and that is something disgusting to them. They think it’s too much of a put-down. They don’t want to face the truth.
In the end, they will discover that they cannot be richer than God Almighty; they cannot be more honored; they cannot be more loving; they cannot be more powerful. We need to understand that God is the Creator of all things, and we are but one of His creatures — fallen into sin — and desperately in need of salvation.
Why should we let our sinful pride rob us of our souls — and of eternal life in heaven? To imagine that we are anything beyond what we really are — sinners — is to lose or forfeit ourselves, for all eternity. When we confess the truth about ourselves, that we are sinners, in need of Jesus Christ, we will be opening the way for Jesus to be King in our lives. With Jesus as our Lord, God, King, and Savior, we will gain the eternal riches of heaven. What a trade-off!
Ashamed of our sins? Yes, we should be — but, that is coupled with praising God for His loving salvation. We are loved and unashamed of Jesus.
In the freedom of the saving love of Jesus, we say, “Hallelujah! Lord, You have so humbly come down to earth to save us. Your glory is from all eternity and to all eternity. And, it is all in love. Blessed be Your name.”
Love,
Margaret
