Springing Up to Eternal Life
Some people say, “A picture is worth more than a thousand words.” And, that is true in all sorts of situations. But, when Jesus paints a word picture, the picture He paints has a much greater depth of personal meaning — far beyond words. His message is too great for mere human words. That is why Jesus painted a picture for the Samaritan woman at the well, when He says in John 4:13-14,
Everyone who drinks of this water shall thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.
The earthly water we drink every day (and need) satisfies our physical needs for a relatively short time. The water that Jesus gives us is the truth of His salvation as spelled out for us in His word — the Bible. When the message of God’s salvation in Jesus Christ is taken into our souls and we realize the greatness of God’s love for us — and the awesomeness of a real, honest-to-goodness, eternal salvation — then, we are drinking of God’s living waters.
When we are receiving God’s truths into our hearts, where we trust them, we are being satisfied with the acknowledgment of God’s saving love for us as an individual. Once our spiritual longing has been quenched in the realization that God has loved us all along, we will no longer have that emptiness and deadness of not knowing God as our heavenly Father. Instead, the truths of God’s word will satisfy our souls and give us an inner joy that will keep on springing up as we face our new challenges, trials, and tribulations for the day.
We need to see and remember who gives us that word of salvation. It is not a mere man. Jesus said, “…the water that I shall give him.” It is God who speaks to us in His word, the Bible. As we study God’s word, we need to listen to what God is saying. Ask God to open our hearts and minds to receive His word in the right way.
When we realize the gift of salvation Jesus has simply given us by His grace, that knowledge of our salvation will become, “a well of water springing up to eternal life.” God’s words give life to our souls. The water is free and abundant. It give us joy and peace, now and for all eternity.
Note where this living water Jesus gives will become a “well of water”. It will be “in him” — in us. Way deep down in our inner being we will know eternal life — we will know God saves us in Jesus Christ. That is why God’s saving word will keep on “springing up” in our every need, until we reach “eternal life”.
Receiving the grace of God’s word to us, we say, “Hallelujah! Lord, give us Your water of life. Quench our inner thirst for Your truths, so that we may rest in knowing Your eternal love.”
Love,
Margaret
