How You Listen

How You Listen

Many people perk up their ears  when they think  some sort of benefit  could be headed their way.     They might claim  a faith  in Christ Jesus  just for a free trip  to heaven.     But,  they’re too embarrassed  to share that faith.     They hide their faith  for fear  of losing “friends”  and having others reject them.

But, they need  to consider  what Jesus taught us  in Luke 8:16-18.     Jesus taught,

Now no one after lighting a lamp covers it over  with a container,  or puts it  under a bed;  but he puts it  on a lampstand,  in order  that those  who come in  may see the light.     For nothing is hidden  that shall not become evident,  nor anything secret  that shall not be known  and come to light.

Therefore  take care  how you listen;  for whoever has,  to him shall more be given;  and whoever does not have,  even what he thinks he has  shall be take away  from him.

This truth is very important  for everyone  to think about  and know.     If we have honestly realized  that we are sinners  doomed to hell  —  and that Christ Jesus’  suffering,  death,  and resurrection  has actually paid  for all our sins  —  and truly saved us  from an eternity  in hell  —  we should be so reasonably happy about that,  that we joyfully  and willingly share  that truth  with others  with a changed lifestyle.

People who realize  the reality  of the gift  of salvation  they have  through faith  in Jesus  are so awed and honored  by God’s personal love  and mercy,  that their lives change.     They no longer want  to live in sin  —  to the point  that others notice  —  and they want others  to notice  their change.     The sins that gripped them before  become a thing of the past.

Greediness,  lust,  selfishness,  lying,  anger,  hatefulness  and falsehoods  of every sort  are left aside  as one holds onto God’s love  and forgiveness  through faith  in Jesus alone.     Instead,  they have the “light”  of a joyful faith,  loving concern for others,  and a sharing  of God’s love.

So,  we “take care how you listen.     Did we “listen”  and actually accept the whole  of God’s salvation?     Or,  was our listening  only a half-hearted acceptance  of God’s truths?     If our “lamp”  of God’s truths  is actually lit,  we will want others  to have that same “light”.

Jesus’ advice is for us to “take care”.     When one wholly accepts God’s salvation,  they will eagerly study more of God’s truths  in the Bible,  and to them,  “shall more  be given”.     That is more faith,  hope,  and love  to serve God with.     But,  those who have not really accepted Jesus  as their Savior,  might join a church for the sake of looking good,  but they don’t care  to learn more  about God’s word,  and over time  will lose their faith  — “whoever does not have,  even what he thinks he has  shall be taken away  from him”.

As we joyfully  “take care”  to share and grow our faith,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD, keep us  and strengthen us  in Your truths.”

Love,
Margaret
