The Unfolding of Your Words
When a piece of material or an article of clothing is folded up, it is difficult to see what it really looks like. But, when we carefully unfold it, we can know for sure what it looks like and appreciate it. The same is true with God’s word in the Bible. We might see a story, verse, or parable, but we don’t know how it relates to everything else in the whole Bible — or how it relates to our whole lives.
That is why Psalm 119:130 proclaims in praise to God,
The unfolding of Your words gives light;
It gives understanding to the simple.
One does not have to have a theological degree in order to understand what God wants us to know. We just need to thoughtfully “unfold” God’s word to us and think through everything God is teaching us there. To skim through God’s word is of no worth to anyone because we will miss the important values and truths God wants to teach us.
When we study God’s word and take the time to think about it and apply it to our life’s situation, we will remember it. Then when we read another part of God’s word, we will see the connection to what God is teaching us in various situations — and that will lead us to an even better understanding.
That better understanding is like a “light” going on in our hearts regarding our personal lives. That better understanding — that “light” — brings joy, meaning and comfort to our whole lives. That is why the psalmist talks about wanting to know more and more about God’s teachings. Learning about God’s love, almighty power, wisdom and majesty makes one grow in faith and love for our Creator, Redeemer.
Then, with something we can really be happy about, we say, “Hallelujah! LORD, Your word truly is a precious treasure worth more than anything else. Keep us strong in Your truths.”
Love,
Margaret
