The Demons
In the book of James, James is writing to show that if we honestly have faith like we claim in Christ Jesus our Lord, we will automatically show our faith by living a good, obedient life. In other words, we will help those around us, we will not be arrogant over the poor, we will not blaspheme the name of our Lord, we will be kind and good to all, we will obey the ten commandments, and live in love according to God’s love towards us.
Those who stubbornly live in the sins of this world are not showing a true faith. To make that point clearly he says in James 2:19-20,
You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?
James fully recognizes that absolutely no one is saved eternally by their good works. But, in the very same breath, we must all realize that a true faith shows itself with all sorts of good works. We cannot claim to know Christ Jesus as our Savior, and yet, live a life of selfishness, arrogance, bitterness, nastiness, or sinful disobedience of any sort.
We need to always remember the truth expressed in 1 John 4:19-20,
We love, because He first loved us. If some one says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for the one who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.
As we accept the truth of God’s almighty power to save us from all our sins through Christ Jesus, we must also realize that “the demons” also know that Jesus is the one and only Savior. As they “believe”, they also “shudder”. They know the truth, but “shudder” because they don’t want to bow down to the authority of the LORD God Almighty. They want to be in power and hate the idea of being ruled over by all that is good, holy, and most righteous.
James wants us to grow in the love of God, so that knowing how beloved we are by our Creator, we will most willingly and gladly live out that love so that others will also come to know the LORD as their Savior from all sin. A true faith gives us an attitude adjustment.
Ever thankful for the love we have received, we say, “Hallelujah! Lord, let our lives grow in the awesomeness of Your grace and mercy towards us.”
Love,
Margaret
