Cast Up a Highway for Him Who Rides

It is so nice  to have smooth sailing  over the open highway.     Without potholes,  detours,  clogged traffic,  or anything else that hinders,  a person can pleasantly and easily  reach their goal,  in a relatively short time.      We appreciate good highways.     It’s just nice  to have things nice.

On the other hand,  we can all recollect  any number of highway problems  that are really frustrating.      They take so much extra time  and patience  —  not to mention gas.      Problematic highways  just wear a person out.      They can be very unpleasant.

We, too,  can be very unpleasant  in God’s sight.      If we are always bitter,  complaining,  unthankful,  unrepentant,  stubborn,  untrusting,  unfaithful,  we can be a real pain  to the LORD God Almighty,  who desires to help us  through this life.      Our Lord has loved us  with such a tender  and forgiving love.      He patiently deals with all our idiosyncrasies.      And yet,  we can be rather contrary  with all our worries  and lack of trust.

When we have all sorts of problems  that want to destroy our relationship  with our Lord and Savior,  King David reminds us  of how we need to deal  with those problems.      In Psalm 68:4, David sings,

Sing to God,  sing praises  to His name;
Cast up a highway  for Him who rides  through the deserts,
Whose name is the LORD,  and exult  before Him.

This truth is contrary  to our human nature.      We want to complain  and throw big pity parties,  but that is the wrong attitude.      It is wrong because God is still loving us  and He is wanting us  to put life into perspective.      All things are possible to the LORD.      Nothing is impossible.      Jesus has already given His whole life  for us  and risen in victory.      We don’t have to be complainers  or lose faith.

Our hearts and lives are a desert.      We are bleak and fruitless inside  because we know only the sinful side  of this world  and are clueless  about the beauties,  holiness,  and glories of heaven.      Because we face the problems of sin  —  and because God loves us  —  we need  to reach out to God in truth.      The truth is that He should be praised  with our whole being.      He deserves our praises.      We should be exulting before the Lord  because that is  being happy  just because God is God  and always has been God.      He has loved us  from all eternity  and deserves our highest praise  for His self-sacrificing faithfulness  to our eternal salvation.

As we sing praises to His name and exult before Him  we are building up a highway  for God  to come into our lives  much more easily.      Why should we bitterly complain  all the time  and make it tough  for God to help us.      We need  to be thankfully remembering all  that God has already done for us  in Jesus Christ.      In remembering and praising  we will learn  to trust God  to take care of us.      When we live in this truth,  God can better help  us.

Remembering all that God is,  we say, “Hallelujah!      LORD God,  blessed be all Your saving love  as You come into our hearts  and create in us  clean hearts  and right spirits.”

Love,
Margaret
