Uphold Me That I May Be Safe
In many different ways throughout God’s word, we are told that it is God who keeps us safe. He is the only one who is able to watch over us and protect us unto eternal life. As we face all sorts of temptations, God is the one who is able to uphold us and strengthen us, so that we aren’t caught in the world’s deceitful ways. The Bible gives us all sorts of examples of God’s protective care, so that we will learn to trust Him in every situation.
If we think we can handle life all by ourselves, without God’s protection, we are asking for trouble, because that is like refusing God’s almighty love and care. The psalmist realized this as he wrote Psalm 119:116-117,
Sustain me according to Thy word, that I may live;
And do not let me be ashamed of my hope.
Uphold me that I may be safe,
That I may have regard for Thy statutes continually,
Thou hast rejected all those who wander from Thy statutes,
For their deceitfulness is useless.
The psalmist is remembering that all who reject God’s way of living will be rejected by God. They may try to be deceitful and pretentious in giving lip service to the Lord, but God knows what is in every heart and mind. He knows our every intention.
This psalmist realizes that if he tries to get through this life by his own strength, he will be leaving himself wide open to all sorts of deceptions and misleadings. It won’t be long before he will be wandering far away from God’s ways — and he won’t even be aware of it.
Knowing that only God can truly keep him safe in the true faith, he prays, “Uphold me that I may be safe, that I may have regard for Thy statutes continually.” None of us can have respect for God’s statutes by our own strength or righteousness. If we honestly want to stay in God’s protective care, we must ask our Lord and Savior to uphold us in His truths.
In Deuteronomy 31:6, and many other places, God promises His protective care to all who put their faith in Him. In Deuteronomy, He said,
Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the LORD your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.
When God makes a promise, He keeps it. So, let us not be afraid, but trust in our Lord to uphold us and keep us safe in His truths. He will keep us safe as we put our trust and faith in Him. Safe in God’s truths, we won’t ever have to be ashamed of our hope.
Depending on God’s eternal word, we say, “Hallelujah! Lord, You have proven Your trustworthiness in Your eternal word. You have kept all of Your promises of a Savior in the minutest detail. We know that only You can keep us safe in Your truths.”
Love,
Margaret
