Had It Not Been the LORD

October 24, 2019

Had It Not Been the LORD

How very necessary it is to give credit where credit is due.     When “things”  just “happen” to go our way,  people often tend to breathe a sigh of relief —  and imagine  that something they did  in their wonderful wisdom  is the reason  for that particular blessing  in their lives.     Not so fast…       We need to pay close attention to the LORD over all.       He created all of creation and He rules over all of creation.

So, we need to slow down and realize  what King David realized  in Psalm 124.     It reads:

“If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,”
Let Israel now say—

“If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,
When men rose up against us,
Then they would have swallowed us alive,
When their wrath was kindled against us;
Then the waters would have overwhelmed us,
The stream would have gone over our soul;
Then the swollen waters
Would have gone over our soul.”

Blessed be the Lord,
Who has not given us as prey to their teeth.
Our soul has escaped as a bird  from the snare of the fowlers;
The snare is broken, and we have escaped.

Our help is in the name of the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth.

David is rightfully giving credit where credit is honestly due.     After all, David was praising God  for rescuing him from enemies out to kill him.     Nevertheless,  no one on earth stands a chance with any challenge  on this earth,  “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side.”     It’s true  that our LORD and Creator often lets us pat ourselves on the back  for the blessings we receive from Him.     But, that doesn’t make us right  in our boastful feelings.     We need  to think about our measly abilities  and the LORD’s absolutely almighty capabilities.     Nothing is impossible for Him  —  and all things are possible for Him.     We certainly cannot truthfully say that about ourselves.

For that reason  we need to seriously think about everything that happens  in our lives.     God is constantly blessing us  in all sorts of ways.      We cannot even count all the ways God blesses us each and every day.     So, let us just stop and think our day over.     We have received many blessings every day.      Let us always remember to give thanks  where thanks is due.

With thankful hearts,  we say,  “Hallelujah!     LORD, blessed be Your name  for Your constant, abiding love and care.”
