Incline My Heart to Your Testimonies
We people get so easily distracted by all that is going on in this world — whether it be by stuff in the media, by our efforts to get the stuff ( the riches ) of this world, or by gaining a sense of authority over others. In the maze of this world and our worldly desires, it is easy to lose sight of what is really important in life.
In thinking about all these things, a psalmist realized how very vital it is to keep one’s head on straight. It’s dangerous to let ourselves be led around by the things in this world. And, it is ever so important to realize all the truths of what is really important in this world.
All the waywardness, riches, and authorities in this world are nothing in heaven. They are meaningless and we can’t take any of this worldly stuff with us when we die. Realizing our precarious situation in this world, the psalmist humbly wrote in Psalm 119:33-40,
Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes,
And I shall keep it to the end.
Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law;
Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart.
Make me walk in the path of Your commandments,
For I delight in it.
Incline my heart to Your testimonies,
And not to covetousness.
Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things,
And revive me in Your way.
Establish Your word to Your servant,
Who is devoted to fearing You.
Turn away my reproach which I dread,
For Your judgments are good.
Behold, I long for Your precepts;
Revive me in Your righteousness.
We need to think on this prayer and seriously apply it to our thinking and real needs in this world. Safe in heaven some day, we will be ever so glad to have had a rightful understanding of what is truly best for us.
Trusting in God’s wisdom in caring for us, we say, “Hallelujah! LORD, thank You for Your eternal word that leads us to eternal life.”
Love,
Margaret
