Sing!
Just thinking about the very, very beginning of creation — does anyone imagine that an apple tree realized that it was getting old, and had better produce some fruit with seeds in it, so that those seeds could plant themselves and produce more apple trees, so that when the very first apple tree died, there would be more apple trees to carry on? How can an apple tree be cognizant of its need to reproduce? How can an apple tree have the ability or concern to create a seed with a potential for life?
One could ask the very same question about every form of life on earth, that obviously goes through the process of decay and death, but also reproduces its likeness. There are so many wonders in all of creation that are so intelligently designed that it is imperative that we sing praises to the Creator and Sustainer of all creation. And then, when we realize that this almighty intelligent designer even created a way for fallen mankind to be redeemed and saved for eternal life, we are beholding a wonder far beyond what any words can describe.
It’s obvious that we have a real, inner need to express praise and thanksgiving to our Creator, Sustainer, and Savior. There is no real joy, freedom, or peace for the life that refuses to recognize God’s almighty power and love in all of creation. The refusal to break forth in praise locks up one’s heart in bitterness because it is an outright denial of an obvious truth. Such a life imprisons itself in pride and arrogance to its own demise.
The writers of the Psalms were those who enjoyed the freedom and blessedness of giving thanks where thanks is truly due. Psalm 147:1 expresses it by singing,
Praise the LORD!
For it is good to sing praises to our God;
For it is pleasant and praise is becoming.
Praise really is becoming. Thankful hearts are becoming. Singing to God is actually a necessity of a life that is to live forever. We were created to produce the fruit of songs that “Praise the LORD!” As we let the seeds of praise be planted in our hearts, we will grow onto eternal life. That, in and of itself, is a wonder that cannot be described.
With thankful hearts, we say, “Hallelujah! Lord, we thank You for all Your wonders — and especially for the wonder of Your love and salvation through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Your wisdom is so far beyond our comprehension that we praise Your holy name.”
Love,
Margaret
