Therefore Having These Promises

Therefore,  Having These Promises…

When we have a promise  of something good,  our expectations  shape our thinking  and behavior.      So,  we often hear things like,  “Finish your peas,  and then you can have  this yummy dessert.”      The peas are devoured  and the dessert  is thoroughly enjoyed.

God promises eternal life in heaven  to all who believe  in Jesus  as our Savior from sin.      So,  we look to Jesus  to wash away  all our sins  and to make us holy  in all our living — so that we may  freely  enter heaven  because of what Jesus has done  for us  on the cross.      With all this,  Paul teaches us  in 2 Corinthians 7:1,

Therefore,  having these promises,  beloved,  let us cleanse ourselves  from all defilement  of flesh  and spirit,  perfecting holiness  in the fear of God.

We have the promise  of heaven.      Through faith,  Jesus has washed away  all of our sins.      With these truths  firmly before us,  our thinking  and behavior change.      We don’t want to get filthy  with the defilements  of the world  ever again.      We want to stay clean  because  we are now  children of the King of kings,  and LORD of lords.      We now desire  to act like  the children of God Almighty.      That is why  2 Timothy 2:21 says,

Therefore,  if a man  cleanses himself  from these things,  he will be  a vessel  for honor,  sanctified,  useful to the Master,  prepared for every good work.

Paul is talking about  getting rid of  all of our sinful inclinations.      Obviously,  the list of this world’s sinful tendencies  is awfully long.      But,  there is a type of defilement  that some  do not recognize  as a filthy defilement  in God’s eyes.      This defilement  is the mixing  of heathen practices  in with our Christian living.      These heathen practices  include  different ways of praying,  meditating,  chanting,  dreaming,  mind control,  lighting candles,  making pilgrimages,  etc.,  all for the purpose  of gaining  a sense of peace  in this world.

But,  none of that  honestly gives peace.      Our perfect peace  comes only through faith  in what Jesus Christ  did for us  on the cross.      If some sort of  “emptying of the mind”  brings a short term feeling  of peace,  that is a deception  of Satan  that is tearing down  our faith  and allowing Satan  to work in our lives.      These same sorts of deceptions  were around  during the early church.      That is why Paul warns  in Colossians 2:8,

See to it  that no one  takes you captive  through philosophy  and empty deception,  according to the tradition  of men,  according to  the elementary principles  of the world,  rather than  according to Christ.

It is our duty  to make very sure  we are not being bamboozled  by the sly intentions  of those making fraudulent claims  to some sort of spirituality  and a higher knowledge  of God’s ways.      Their ways  are not God’s ways.      If we have honestly  put our faith  in Jesus,  then let’s hold onto  His promises alone — and live by faith  according to His word  alone.      It’s all laid out for us — plain and simple — in God’s word,  the Bible.

With Jesus only  as our Savior,  Guide,  and Teacher  we will have the peace  that passes all understanding,  because only then  will we be  in God’s hands.      In peace  we will say,  “Hallelujah!      Lord Jesus,  Your word  calls you  the Prince of Peace.      Thank You  for so willingly coming  into our poor hearts.”

Love,
Margaret
