The Government Will Rest on His Shoulders
Around 740 years before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah told about Him. Because all the things Isaiah said came true in Jesus, it is evidence of God’s power to keep His word. Some of Isaiah’s prophecies were about Jesus’ birth, so as we approach Christmas, it is good to remember what was written in Isaiah 9:6-7,
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
On the throne of David and over his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will accomplish this.
Then in Matthew, chapters 1 and 2, we read about Jesus’ birth and the magi who came looking for “He who has been born King of the Jews“. These magi came from some country in the east, but they were certain that a particular star was indicating the birth of the King who was to be worshiped. The prophecy in Micah 5:2, which was written somewhere between 742-687 B.C., said where the Savior was to be born.
And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah,
Are by no means least among the leaders of Judah;
For out of you shall come forth a Ruler,
Who will shepherd My people Israel.
And then, in Revelation 19:16 we read that Jesus’ name is “King of kings and LORD of lords“. When Isaiah said, “The government will rest on His shoulders“, he indicated that all dominion and all rule belong to Jesus through all eternity. There is no end to Jesus’ rule over all things because He is God.
So, what are we going to do about it? Do we want to fight it like wicked King Herod and the Jewish religious leaders, who crucified Jesus?
Or are we rejoicing to see that Jesus is our “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace“? Can we be glad because there will be no end to His government of peace? Can we find relief because His kingdom is one of justice and righteousness forevermore?
God Almighty, our Creator and Redeemer, has accomplished all these things so that we can be forgiven of all our sins through faith in Jesus, and have the peace of never having to deal with the pains of sin ever again. That is love. Oh how we need that love! Let us not refuse it.
Worshiping our King, we say, “Hallelujah! Lord Jesus, thank You so much for patiently loving us, even though we wander like lost sheep. Keep us in Your fold, that we may enjoy the peace of having You as our Shepherd.”
Love,
Margaret
