Mary Treasured Up All These Things

Mary Treasured Up All These Things

It was a most marvelous thing.      It was not a normal,  everyday happening.      Angels came  to the totally unsuspecting shepherds  and announced,  of all things,  the birth of the Savior.      Nothing like that  has ever happened  to any of us.      The whole story is  in Luke, chapter 2.

We get to hear the story  every year  at Christmas time — and can enjoy it  any time  we feel like it  as we open up our Bibles.      But,  the actual event  was beyond awesome  for the shepherds.      And,  it was beyond awesome  for Mary.      She certainly was not expecting company  right after she gave birth  to the Savior.      What a time for company!

To have shepherds come,  “glorifying and praising God  for all that they had  heard and seen”  and to have them say  that it all was  “just as had been told them”   by the angels  just had to be amazing  to Mary and Joseph.

It is no wonder  that  Mary treasured up  all these things,  pondering them  in her heart.”      But,  what are we doing  with this now age-old  bit of history?      Are we treasuring up  all these things  in our hearts?      It was all just for us.      All this took place  so that  we could realize  that God keeps His word  and that His  work of salvation  is for real.      It’s not a pretend thing  of man’s imagination.      Are we pondering on them  and thinking about  how God worked  all things  exactly as He had them prophesied  many years before?

Or,  are we  so involved  in shopping,  decorating,  partying,  and Santa Claus traditions,  that we’ve totally forgotten  what Christmas is really about?

We need to find  a quiet place,  open up our Bibles  to Luke, chapter 2,  and ponder  over the power,  precision,  and love of God Almighty.      He has done  mighty things  for us  as He has faithfully  kept His word.      We have a reality to ponder — not some myth  that keeps on evolving  as people’s imaginations  keep on adding  their own versions  to it.

As we ponder,  let us also share  the reality  of our one-and-only Savior  from all sin.      This is the reality  we need to pass on  to our children,  so that they can come  to know the truth  of what we should be celebrating,  when we treasure  the birth  of our Savior.

We have a real treasure here.      It’s ours  to keep forever.      Let us not drop it  or trade it  for a silly myth.

In the love and wonder  of the treasure given to us,  we say,  “Hallelujah!      Lord,  thank You  for Your faithful love  in keeping  all of Your promises  to us.      Open our eyes,  ears,  hearts,  and minds  so that  we may truly value  the Gift  You have given us  in Christ Jesus.”

Love,
Margaret
